A NINE-YEAR-OLD intact, male Vietncamiiese pot-bellied pig wveighing 43 7 kg Wcas prcscieted for castration following right testicular enlargement of two yecars duration. The testicle had been growing slowly, but rapid growth had been noted over the previous three moniths. The owner reported that the boar demonistrated less miasculine behaviour than the other boars on the farm. On physical examiiinationi, both testicles were firm acnd enlcarged, and the right testicle appeared to be 2 5 times larger than the left. Other than the size aind consistency, the testicles palpated normally. No other abnormialities were observed. The pig was fasted overnight. Precanaesthetic medication consisted of 0 007 mg/kg medetomedine (Domitor; Pfizer), 0-2 mg/kg butorphanol (Torbugesic; Fort Dodge), and 0.02 mg/kg atropine (Atropine sulfate; Phoenix). Ketamine (Ketaset; Fort Dodge) (10 mg/kg given intrav7enously) was used for anaesthesia induction and the anaesthesia wsas maintaimed by isoflurane inhalation. The pig was placed in dorsal recumbency and a 9 cIml iilsion was made through the skin over the right testicle. The vascular pedicle supplyitng the testicle was identified and ligated wvith Number 2 polyglactin suture (Vicryl; Ethicon). The subcutaneous tissues were closed using Number 1 polyglactin suture (Vicryl; Ethicon) in a simple continuous pattern. The skin was then closed using Number 2 polyamide suture (Braunamid; BraunL McGraw) in a cruciate pattern. The left testicle was then removed in a similar fashion. Recovery from anaesthesia was uneventful, and procaine penicillin G (Pfi-Pen G; Pfizer) (22,000 iLt/kg) was administered postoperatively.
