Pensar o uso do livro didático de Geografia na Educação Básica supõe refletir, inicialmente, sobre duas dimensões: a primeira diz respeito à revisão na relação conteúdo-método geográfico instituída na didática escolar tomando como referência o uso desse compêndio na sala de aula. A outra supõe a consideração da influência da cultura mass media sobre as representações de mundo, de sociedade e de ensino-aprendizagem pelos professores e alunos no âmbito escolar. Nessa perspectiva, o presente artigo considerando as contribuições de autores como Castrogiovanni; Goulart (1999), Schäffer (1999), Tonini (2003), Hobsbawm (1984), Hall (1997; 2000), entre outros, analisa o livro didático como objeto de pesquisa e sua influência na formação de conceitos espaciais pelos alunos e professores, propondo o planejamento do ensino a partir da dialogia com as categorias geográficas. A reflexão aponta para o desenvolvimento do pensamento espacial considerando, sobretudo, o espaço vivido, e o professor como mediador do processo ensino-aprendizagem, favorecendo o desenvolvimento intelectual, social e afetivo dos alunos, o respeito às diferenças e engajamento em ações cidadãs, e o fortalecimento de atitudes de responsabilidade social. A análise do livro didático supõe a investigação dos fatos e acontecimentos concretos que marcam a vida cotidiana sem perder de vista a reflexão coletiva e o compartilhamento de significados sobre o sentido da vida, da humanidade.
