Rode arbeitete vor seinem Studium als Entwickler im Bereich Digitaltechnik. Nach Abschluss seines Studiums der Betriebswirtschaft an der Universität Graz setzte er seine berufliche Laufbahn in der betriebswirtschaftlichen Beratung fort. Hier spezialisierte er sich auf Projekte in den Unternehmensbereichen Finanz-und Rechnungswesen sowie Unternehmensführung, zuletzt in einer verantwortlichen Funktion bei KPMG Consulting. Seit 2001 ist er als Kaufmännische Geschäftsführer des ftw. tätig. Markus Kommenda ist seit 1997 mit der Aufbauarbeit für das ftw. beschäftigt, dem er seit seiner Gründung als Geschäftsführer vorsteht. Nach dem Studium der Elektrotechnik in Wien und Toulouse (Frankreich) begann er seine berufliche Laufbahn als Assistent am Institut für Nachrichtentechnik und Hochfrequenztechnik der TU Wien. Weitere Stationen: Gastforscher am Centre National d'Etudes des Télécommunications in Lannion (Bretagne); wissenschaftlicher Berater für France Télécom; Fachreferent für Informations-und Kommunikationstechnologien im BIT (Büro für Internationale Forschungs-und Technologiekooperation), zuletzt Forscher und Entwickler bei der Kapsch AG im Bereich Sprachverarbeitung. Das Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien (ftw., Telecommunications Research Center Vienna) wurde 1999 errichtet und verwirklicht die Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft in einem völlig neuen Modell. An der Gründung des ftw. waren Institute der Technischen Universität Wien, mehrere Netzbetreiber, die in Wien konzentrierten großen Telekom-Hersteller, einige innovative Kleinunternehmen, eine außeruniversitäre Forschungseinrichtung und ein Fachverband beteiligt. Gemäß seiner Mission zielt die Tätigkeit des ftw. auf die nachhaltige Stärkung der Innovationskraft und der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit seiner Mitglieder. Dies wird erreicht durch das Zusammenführen vorhandener Kompetenzen, durch das Erschließen von neuem Wissen und durch eine Beschleunigung der wirtschaftlichen Umsetzung. Gegenwärtig sind am ftw. etwa 50 angestellte Forscher aus dem In-und Ausland beschäftigt; dazu kommen noch etwa 26 von den jeweiligen Partnerfirmen für einzelne Forschungsprojekte abgestellte Mitarbeiter. Für die ersten vier Jahre steht dafür ein Budget in Höhe von rd. 15 Mio. Euro zur Verfügung. Einige wesentliche Aspekte dieses Kooperationsmodells lassen sich recht einfach bereits aus der Bezeichnung selbst ableiten -das Betreiben von Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Telekommunikation an einem zusammengefassten Standort in der österreichischen Bundeshauptstadt. Auf eine Reihe weiterer Aspekte ist gesondert aufmerksam zu machen: -Das Forschungszentrum wird von den oben erwähnten Unternehmen und Institutionen gemeinsam gelenkt und getragen. Operativ wird die Zusammenarbeit in Form von kooperativen Forschungsprojekten realisiert.
