The Center for Strategic Studies is a division of The CNA Corporation (CNAC). The Center combines, in one organizational entity, analyses of security policy, regional analyses, studies of political-military issues, and strategic and force assessment work. Such a center allows CNAC to join the global community of centers for strategic studies and share perspectives on major security issues that affect nations.The Center for Strategic Studies is dedicated to providing expertise in work that considers a full range of plausible possibilities, anticipates a range of outcomes, and does not simply depend on straight-line predictions. ABSTRACTCNA and the Centro Militare di Studi Strategici (CeMiSS), the analytical group within the Italian equivalent of the U.S. National Defense University (CASD), agreed to conduct a joint project in 2006 on European and American views of the security situation in Europe, with particular regard for the situation around the Mediterranean Sea. The CeMiSS leader of the project, contributed a paper on Italian foreign policy. Daniel Whiteneck compared European and American views on the security situation. H. H. Glaffney discussed hard and soft power, noting that it represents a spectrum., not a dichotomy. Thaddeus Moyseowicz covered the experience and future of multilateral organizations in the Mediterranean context, and Mark Rosen discussed the questions of international regulation of the sea spaces. The meeting was notable for the significant participation by the Director of CASD, the Vice Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, and over a dozen flag officers representing all three branches of the Italian services.
