The overall objective for distributed data bases is the shar-iTig of data among several distinct but inter-connected computing facilities through an integrating mechanism. A review ¢~f the liiterature indicates that little progress has been made in this area due to the large number of technological problems involved. ,Some researchers have obtained analytic'all ~heoreticai results in tiie area of physical data allocation unde: the restrictive ass[.mlptions of static and known access pa:.terns and independe'.~ce between programs and data. The remaining uns~',h.ed technological and operational l~r~,blems include mea~irement and evaluation techniqu.~s, maintenance of multipk image files, and security/privacy. In the next five to ten years significant benefits would accrue if data .translation techniqti~;s, an integrated data base control system, and rite integratcl, t dala base schema and physically distxibuted data issues were: investigated.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
