A field experiment was conducted on a stratified sample of 354 recyclers and nonrecyclers to test the effects of coupon incentives on consumers' intentions and behavior in recycling aluminum. Results indicate that modest coupon incentives positively influenced recyclers' behavior, but did not influence nonrecyclers. Over the range of incentives tested, evidence suggests that increased recycling frequency is directly related to the coupon value. Implications for incorporating coupon promotional programs into the development of energy conservation policy, and areas for future research are discussed.
This paper investigates the determinants of Canadian direct investment in Northern New York, focusing on the influence of changing foreign exchange rates. Hypotheses are formulated that new investment should be positively related to the value of the U.S. dollar while expansions of existing facilities ought to be unrelated to exchange rate movements. These predictions are supported by the data. Since Canadian investment is found to behave quite differently from domestic‐source investment, we conclude that other factors besides exchange rates account for much of this difference.1
This paper investigates the increasing evidence that Disney has restored its market share dominance and price leadership power in the Central Florida theme park market, while reasserting this region as the base for its global empire. Disney appears to have weathered deep-pocketed challenges from Universal Studios and Las Vegas Hotels successfully, as well as addressing concerns about its ageing brands, adverse demographic trends and post-9/11 international travel restrictions. After analysing attendance data series and updating ticket price patterns, the authors design a classical attendance demand model to investigate alternative explanations for Disney's surprising re-emergence. The model generates estimates of critical elasticities with rival theme park admission prices, gasoline prices, airfares, income and currency exchange rate fluctuations. These findings are pitted against conventional wisdom in explaining Disney's resurgence.
