There is no information in the literature about the variability of resistance of Chinese Brassica vegetables, pak choi and Chinese cabbage, to the white blister disease caused by Albugo candida (Pers.) Kuntze. A collection of 43 accessions of pak choi and 19 accessions of Chinese cabbage was screened for resistance to the Portuguese A. candida isolate Ac 506 at the cotyledon stage. Different levels of resistance were found among the germplasm tested, ranging from complete resistance to full susceptibility. Most of the accessions were highly susceptible with less than 10% of resistant seedlings, and only four accessions of pak choi, presenting more than 50% resistant seedlings, were considered as new sources or resistance to white blister. Inheritance of resistance at the cotyledon stage was studied in two crosses between the most resistant pak choi accession, BRA 117, and the highly susceptible rapid cycling Brassica rapa line CrGC 1.19. It was proposed that resistance to white blister in pak choi BRA 117 is controlled by two nuclear genes with dominant recessive epistatic gene action.Key words: Albugo candida -Brassica rapa -pak choiChinese cabbage -Chinese leaf vegetables -disease resistance Brassica vegetables are of great economic importance throughout the world, and are major horticultural crops both in Portugal and China. Brassica rapa var. pekinensis (Chinese cabbage) and var. chinensis (leaf Chinese cabbage or pak choi) are extensively grown as leaf vegetables in China, being among the 10 most important consumed vegetables in some southeast Asian countries. They have been introduced with success in Europe, America and Australia contributing to the diversification of traditional Brassica vegetable production systems, and responding to the increased demand from consumers for ÔnewÕ vegetables. The biothrophic pathogen Albugo candida (Pers.) attacks all the cultivated Brassica species and several wild crucifers causing the disease known as Ôwhite blisterÕ or Ôwhite rustÕ. Symptoms consist of the initial appearance of more or less conspicuous white sori on the plant leaves and stems, followed by severe distortions of the affected organs, especially flowers and siliqua. On leaf vegetable types even a slight white rust infection can render all the production unmarketable. A recent increase in severity and spread of white blister in Brassica vegetable crops has been reported in several parts of the world. There are several possible reasons for the increased occurrence and severity of white blister in commercial Brassica vegetable crops. These include mainly the introduction and/or development of new pathotypes of A. candida, the increase in production with larger areas of susceptible cultivars and the repeated use of systemic fungicides.Development of resistant cultivars is the best way to control the disease and to ensure low pesticide spraying and residues in leaf vegetables. If systemic fungicides are to be used, alternative disease control measures and resistance management strategies must be implemented, due ...
