S U M M A R YA combined magneto-mineralogical approach is used to diagnose maghemitization in magnetic grains of basaltic rock fragments from sand dunes in the Namibian desert in SW Africa. Data were obtained from static magnetic analysis, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Micro-Raman spectroscopy showed that the magnetic grains in the lithic fragments form oxidative solid solution series with magnetite and maghemite as end-members. The five active Raman modes at 712, 665, 507, 380 and 344 cm −1 indicate that maghemite in the magnetic grains has well-defined structural properties. The FMR spectral analysis provides evidence for long-range dipolar coupling, which suggests intergrowth of the magnetic phases of the oxidative solid solution series. Thermomagnetic experiments and hysteresis measurements reveal a Curie temperature of about 890 K for this maghemite. Upon heating to 970 K part of the maghemite is altered to thermodynamically more stable hematite. After selective thermal decomposition of the maghemite in a protected atmosphere, the remaining magnetic phase has a Curie temperature of 850 K, characteristic for magnetite. The unique thermal stability of this natural maghemite above its Curie temperature is explained by the well-defined mineral structure, which formed during slow oxidative alteration of magnetite under arid climate conditions.

Earth’s deep carbon cycle affects atmospheric CO2, climate, and habitability. Owing to the extreme solubility of CaCO3, aqueous fluids released from the subducting slab could extract all carbon from the slab. However, recycling efficiency is estimated at only around 40%. Data from carbonate inclusions, petrology, and Mg isotope systematics indicate Ca2+ in carbonates is replaced by Mg2+ and other cations during subduction. Here we determined the solubility of dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] and rhodochrosite (MnCO3), and put an upper limit on that of magnesite (MgCO3) under subduction zone conditions. Solubility decreases at least two orders of magnitude as carbonates become Mg-rich. This decreased solubility, coupled with heterogeneity of carbon and water subduction, may explain discrepancies in carbon recycling estimates. Over a range of slab settings, we find aqueous dissolution responsible for mobilizing 10 to 92% of slab carbon. Globally, aqueous fluids mobilise $${35}_{-17}^{+20}$$ 35 − 17 + 20 % ($${27}_{-13}^{+16}$$ 27 − 13 + 16 Mt/yr) of subducted carbon from subducting slabs.

Here we report the results of multiple analytical techniques on sub-mm particulate material derived from Unit 1 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant to provide a better understanding of the events that occurred and the environmental legacy. Through combined x-ray fluorescence and absorption contrast micro-focused x-ray tomography, entrapped U particulate are observed to exist around the exterior circumference of the highly porous Si-based particle. Further synchrotron radiation analysis of a number of these entrapped particles shows them to exist as UO 2 —identical to reactor fuel, with confirmation of their nuclear origin shown via mass spectrometry analysis. While unlikely to represent an environmental or health hazard, such assertions would likely change should break-up of the Si-containing bulk particle occur. However, more important to the long-term decommissioning of the reactors at the FDNPP (and environmental clean-upon), is the knowledge that core integrity of reactor Unit 1 was compromised with nuclear material existing outside of the reactors primary containment.

Vibrational spectroscopy is a fundamental tool to investigate local atomic arrangements and the effect of the environment, provided that the spectral features can be correctly assigned. This can be challenging in experiments and simulations when double peaks are present because they can have different origins. Fermi dyads are a common class of such doublets, stemming from the resonance of the fundamental excitation of a mode with the overtone of another. We present a new, efficient approach to unambiguously characterize Fermi resonances in density functional theory (DFT) based simulations of condensed phase systems. With it, the spectral features can be assigned and the two resonating modes identified. We also show how data from DFT simulations employing classical nuclear dynamics can be post-processed and combined with a perturbative quantum treatment at a finite temperature to include analytically thermal quantum nuclear effects. The inclusion of these effects is crucial to correct some of the qualitative failures of the Newtonian dynamics simulations at a low temperature such as, in particular, the behavior of the frequency splitting of the Fermi dyad. We show, by comparing with experimental data for the paradigmatic case of supercritical CO, that these thermal quantum effects can be substantial even at ambient conditions and that our scheme provides an accurate and computationally convenient approach to account for them.
