EVALUATION OF CORROSION IN WELD REGION AND BASE METAL OF API 5L X80 PIPE IN MEDIUM CONTAINING HYDROGEN SULPHIDE AbstractThe objective of this study is to compare the corrosion resistance of the base metal (MB) and weld region (RCS) of a X80 pipeline in three types of aqueous solution of acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) 0,5% by weight: naturally aerated, non-aerated and non-aerated with H 2 S. Linear polarization is employed for it determinates Polarization Resistance (R p ) which allows comparing the corrosion resistance of steel in different conditions. The results show that R p practically does not change with the immersion time (until 8 hours), for both regions. The two regions have higher R p in non-aerated aqueous solution, intermediate R p in non-aerated with H 2 S and lower R p in naturally aerated; this is due the effect of oxygen in cathodic reactions and shows that H 2 S can accelerate slightly the corrosion. The RCS has greater R p than the MB for any aeration conditions. The presence of alloying elements in RCS justifies this behavior. The morphology of corrosion was examined under an optical microscope (MO) and shows that uniform corrosion is predominant.
GRAIN ELONGATION INFLUENCE ON HYDROGEN PERMEATION OF STEELFOR API X65 SOUR PIPE WITH LOW Mn CONTENT Abstract HSLA steels are used as pipelines for crude oil and natural gas transportation and, due to the sour environment in which they are applied, the hydrogen embrittlement resistance is a necessary property. In the present work, the influence of grain elongation on hydrogen permeation of steel for API X65 sour pipe with low Mn content was analyzed. Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques were used to characterize the material and the hydrogen permeation tests were conducted based on the ASTM G 148-97 standard. The steel has a microstructure composed of ferrite and pearlite, low content of rounded shape Al and Ca inclusions and do not show microstructure banding. The effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient was calculated for the longitudinal and transversal directions of the steel sheet, the former being slightly higher than the latter. This result indicates that the hydrogen permeation may be influenced by the grain alignment.
