An intact limbal epithelial sheet can be consistently and reproducibly isolated and contains stem cell characteristics in the basal epithelium by degrading laminin 5 and part of collagen IV, and disassembling collagen VII.
These results strongly indicate that the limbal stroma modulates epithelial differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis in the direction favoring stemness, whereas the corneal stroma promotes differentiation. Further investigation into elements constituting such a niche should help unveil the secrecy whereby stemness is controlled.
The replenishment of corneal epithelial SC is a crucial step for reconstructing the ocular surface in patients suffering from devastating ocular surface diseases manifesting with total LSCD. KLAL is one of such procedures and has a long track record and a long follow-up for patients with bilateral total LSCD. This review summarizes the literature experiences and outline new strategies that are important to enhance the success of this procedure. Further research is needed to fully understand the biological processes involved in allogeneic tissue transplantation for preserving epithelial SC adhesion, migration, and survival.
This case report shows a sequential occurrence of bilateral chronic peripheral ulcerative keratitis after an episode of cat-scratch disease. Cat-scratch disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of bilateral chronic peripheral ulcerative keratitis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
