The immigrant population of the Toledo Health District shows a high prevalence of tuberculosis infection, which is higher than the general Spanish population. Differences exist depending upon the country of origin. These results indicate the importance of considering the Mantoux test among the preventive activities addressed toward this immigrant population.
Entre las leguminosas forrajeras se encuentran varias especies promisorias de Stylosanthes, que actualmente son objeto de estudio dentro del Programa de Pastos Tropicales del CIAT. Uno de los mayores problemas del Stylosanthes es el barrenador del tallo Caloptilia sp. (Lepidoptera: Gracilariidae) que se encontró en Colombia en la Estación Experimental de Carimagua (Departamento del Meta) y cerca a Santander de Quilichao (Departamento del Cauca), atacando a S. guianensis, S. capitata, S. scabra, S. hamata, S. viscosa, S. angustifolia y S. humilis. La larva barrena principalmente la parte basal del tallo formando galerías y la planta afectada presenta sobrecrecimiento en forma de nudos. Dicho daño, sumado a la presión de pisoteo del ganado, disminuye la persistencia del Stylosanthes en los potreros. Este estudio incluye aspectos biológicos, búsqueda de enemigos naturales y pruebas preliminares para seleccionar ecotipos naturales resistentes y/o tolerantes al ataque del barrenador. El ciclo de huevo a adultos dura aproximadamente 87 días pasando por cinco instares larvales. Entre los enemigos naturales se han encontrado algunos Hymenópteros parásitos de larvas, como Bracon sp. (Branconidae), Anastatoidea sp. (Eupelmidae) y Chelonus sp. (Braconidae). En los dos casos se encontraron diferencias significantes entre los ecotipos de S. guianensis, S. scabra y S. capitata. Según los resultados obtenidos hasta la fecha, el S. capitata ha presentado los ecotipos más promisorios con características de resistencia al ataque del barrenador.
El pasto Andropogon gayanus se lanzó recientemente con el nombre "Carimagua 1" para uso del sector ganadero, como una importante alternativa para la alimentación de ganado de carne en suelos pobres (oxisoles y ultisoles) del trópico americano. El Programa de Pastos Tropicales del CIAT ha venido realizando, desde 1977, un reconocimiento de plagas en A. gayanus, y se han encontrado pocos insectos dañinos de importancia. Hasta el momento se han reportado dos insectos catalogados como plagas potenciales: el falso medidor de los pastos, Mocis latipes Guenée (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) y el Mido amarillo de la caña de azúcar, Sipha flava ( Forbes) (Homoptera: Aphididae). La importancia del pasto A. gayanus como recurso forrajero para el trópico llevó a la realización de estudios tendientes al conocimiento, comportamiento y formas de prevención de S. flava. Los estudios se realizaron en el Centro Nacional de Investigación "Carimagua". Los resultados indicaron que este insecto causa una pigmentación rojo-púrpura y el secamiento posterior de las hojas, originando detrimentos en la producción y calidad del forraje. Altas poblaciones del Mido se observaron en los meses de la estación lluviosa, cuando el pasto presenta la máxima producción de follaje. Las poblaciones del insecto fueron reguladas por el empleo de cargas altas durante la época en que se presentan las máximas poblaciones y por prácticas de manejo de praderas corno la quema y el corte realizados antes del inicio de la estación lluviosa.
