Adaptability and stability of early sugarcane genotypes in Rio Grande do Sul, BrazilAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the adaptability and stability of early maturation sugarcane genotypes, as to yield of stalk and Brix, in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Fifteen early-maturing genotypes were evaluated in the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 seasons, through the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis. Genotype x environment interactions were highly significant and evidenced changes in the genotype ranking according to the environment. New genotypes exceeded the standard early genotype RB855156 for productivity and stability, although it still stands out for its high productivity, moderate stability and wide adaptability. Genotype RB966928 stood out for its richness and yield of Brix, moderate stability and wide adaptability. Salto do Jacuí, RS, Brazil, is the most suitable site for preliminary tests of genotype selection.
Expression of tuber traits as a function of pot size used to grow potato seedlingsIn potato breeding, the exclusion of inferior genotypes by selection in early generations provides more versatility and cost reduction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of pot size on the expression of tuber traits in potato families grown as seedling generation. Ten potato families were planted in two pot sizes, large (1 L) and small (250 ml), in the greenhouse. The following tuber traits were evaluated: color, roughness, depth of eye, eyebrow, shape, uniformity of shape, pointing, curvature, flattening, tuber general appearance, total mass per plant, average tuber weight and number of tubers. The larger pot provided greater expression of genetic variation for the depth of eye, eyebrow, curvature, flattening, and tuber general appearance of all yield components. Higher means for tuber number, tuber size and tuber mass were obtained in larger pots, while higher genetic coefficient of variation for tuber shape, uniformity of shape and tuber pointing were observed in the small pots.Key words: Solanum tuberosum L., early selection, genetic improvement.

The experiments of stages T1 and T2 were performed at the experimental station of Paranavaí (PR) and T3 stage was installed in three locations in the northwestern of Paraná State. In the first phase (T1) 40 full-sib families from bi-parental crosses were evaluated and were correlated with selected families in the next stage of selection (T2), comparing the number of genotypes indicated by BLUPIS, and the number of clones that composed the T2 stage, by bulk selection. Data were analyzed by REML/BLUP methodology. In T1 stage, twenty and two (22) families were selected for T2 stage, and seven families were selected for T3 stage, being results of the crosses RB835486 x RB72454, SP70-1143 x RB855156, RB835054 x SP83-2847, SP80-3280 x RB835054, RB855156 x SP80-1816, 1 Engª Agrª, M.e em Agronomia, Programa de Pós-graduação em Agronomia, Produção Vegetal, PGAPV, Universidade Federal do Paraná, UFPR, Curitiba, PR.
The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters for the performance prediction of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) families under natural cold stress, in Southern Brazil, and to identify the best combinations of parents aiming at the selection for tolerance to cold. Fifty-three full-sib families were evaluated in an incomplete block design, with five replicates per family, in the municipality of Pelotas, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Harvest occurred in August 2013, nine months after planting and after cold spells with negative temperatures down to -2.2ºC. Statistical analyses, performed with the mixed model methodology, detected significant differences among families. Heritability estimates among progeny means were higher than those of individual heritability. Estimates of genetic progress for the traits megagrams of stalks per hectare, megagrams of brix per hectare, and number of stalks indicated gains of 93.8, 91.0, and 53.3%, respectively. A set of eight promising families that combine high estimates for yield and cold stress tolerance was obtained.
