Genetic divergence and discard of variables in lettuce cultivated under hydroponic system. It was studied the genetic variability of 17 lettuce cultivars, types Butter, Crisp and Iceberg, according to agronomic traits and multivariate procedures. It aims to select divergent cultivars with better performance designed to hydroponic system culture. The importance of the traits for divergence was, also, evaluated by the sequential discards of the variables, according its relative contributions. The trial was carry out in greenhouse, Epamig, Viçosa-MG, in summer of 1999, using randomized blocks with three replicates. Six plants were harvested 46 days after the sowing, and evaluated in ten traits related to the yield. The data were analyzed by Tocher, single linkage, and canonical variables grouping methods. The Mimosa, Brisa, Regina, Monalisa and OGR are the most appropriated cultivars to integrate in specific crossings programs for hydroponic culture. They were more genetically divergent and had good agronomic qualities. Some traits did not affect the original grouping, so they could be eliminated in future studies of lettuce genetic divergence.
A cv.
kg ha-1 N application (first year) and of 14,86 t ha-1 with 177 kg ha-1 N dose (second year). The increases in the production of green ears were not due to increases in the number of ears per area and by length of these. Differently of husked ear/husk ratio, the average weights of the husked and unhusked ears and diameter of unhusked ears were affected by N application. It was proposed a table of recommended N doses based on pre-established prices of N and commercial ears.
Azedinha (Rumex acetosa) is a vegetable crop species consumed in natura in salads and pertains to the group of non-conventional vegetables. These rustic plants are often considered weeds plants. There exist two types of native azedinha in the Sete Lagoas region, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, that are usually grown in family gardens and here denominated Type I and Type II. In this study we characterized the morphologic, physic-chemical and chromatic characteristic of these two types of azedinha. The study was carried out in randomized complete blocks with four replications in dependences of the EPAMIG (Non-Conventional Vegetable Bank) in Prudente de Morais, Brazil. Plants were trained to the point of harvest, 90 days after the planting of seedlings, when they were harvested for analysis. We evaluated the characteristics on the leaves: weight, length, width, number of veins, width/length ratio, transverse and longitudinal diameter of the base of the petiole and longitudinal and transverse diameter ratio of the base of the petiole. We also evaluated the contents of macro and micronutrients and chemical characteristics of the plant. There are significant differences between the assessed characteristics between azedinha types I and II. We concluded that the plants probably belong to two different varieties.
Palavras-chave: dejeto de suínos, estabilização, nutrientes, microbiota, sanidade Fermentation of pig manure for use as an organic fertilizer ABSTRACT This research had the objectives of evaluating the fermentation process of solid pig manure, performing the physical, chemical and microbiological characterization of organic fertilizers produced and identifying the ideal time of fermentation. Solid pig manure, derived from mechanical separation, was arranged in heaps of 2.0 m 3 with, and without, plastic covering. The heaps were turned every fifteen days and watered whenever necessary, with daily control of temperature. By the analysis of the characteristics of temperature, C:N ratio and pH, it was verified that the time of fermentation of 65 days was sufficient for maturation of the pig manure with appropriate chemical and physical characteristics. There was an increase in the concentration of nutrients, except for zinc, during the fermentation, which improved the quality of the pig manure. The period of 84 days of fermentation was sufficient to reduce the population of coliforms by 99.90% compared to the initial population. The presence of Salmonella sp and Listeria monocytogenes was not verified in any of the fermentation samples of pig manure.
The revival of non-conventional edible plants enables important gains in nutritional, social, cultural, economic, and environmental points of view. Among them, sorrel-Rumex acetosa L.-has been deemed pleasant by consumers due to its acid taste. As we do not have a lot of phytotechnical and nutritional information about this plant, the objective was to assess the influence of different spacing sets and cattle manure dosages on their physical-chemical characteristics and bioactive compounds content with antioxidant action. Randomized blocks with four repetitions was chosen as experimental design, using a scheme of subdivided plots, with five dosages of weather-beaten cattle manure in the plots and two sets of spacing in the subplots. Data was submitted to a variance analysis with two factors (two-way ANOVA). It was not verified any significant effect (P>0.05) in the interaction Dosage x Spacing. Fertilization dosages and spacing sets did not have any effect on color and total soluble solids average contents, humidity, titratable acidity, and phenolic compounds. Increasing dosages of organic fertilizer, up to 75 kg ha-1 , reduced the plant's pH; above that amount, pH rose. Presence of anthocyanins and vitamin C was not detected. The total carotenoids average content was not influenced by the manure factor, and the plant presented greater total carotenoids content in the smallest spacing. Antioxidant activity [1.0 mg mL-1 ], although inferior to the standards that were used (BHT, vitamin C and quercetin), was quite representative. A conclusion was reached that fertilizing with weather-beaten cattle manure had an effect only on pH, and cropping spacing had an influence only on carotenoids content. Other phytochemicals and physical-chemical characteristics were not influenced in sorrel plants with different levels of fertilization and sets of spacing.
