Abstract:The bark of A. occidentale L. is rich in tannins. Studies have described various biological activities of the plant, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiulcerogenic and antiinflammatory actions. The objective of this study was to assess the activity of the ethyl acetate phase (EtOAc) of A. occidentale on acute inflammation and to identify and quantify its phenolic compounds by HPLC. The method was validated and shown to be linear, precise and accurate for catechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin and gallic acid. Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus) were treated with saline, Carrageenan (2.5%), Indomethacin (10 mg/kg), Bradykinin (6 nmol) and Prostaglandine E2 (5 µg) at different concentrations of EtOAc -A. occidentale (12.5; 25; 50; and 100 mg/kg/weight p.o.) for the paw edema test. Challenge was performed with carrageenan (500 µg/mL i.p.) for the doses 50 and 100 mg/kg of EtOAc. Levels of cytokines IL-1, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-10 were also measured. All EtOAc -A. occidentale concentrations reduced the edema. At 50 and 100 mg/kg, an anti-inflammatory response of the EtOAc was observed. Carrageenan stimulus produced a neutrophil count of 28.6% while 50 and 100 mg/kg of the phase reduced this to 14.5% and 9.1%, respectively. The EtOAc extract reduced levels of IL-1 and TNF-α. These results suggest that the EtOAc plays a modulatory role in the inflammatory response. The chromatographic method can be used for the analysis of the phenolic compounds of the EtOAc phase.
The use of medicinal plants for the treatment, cure and prevention of the disease is an ancient practice of mankind. Among the current ones, obesity is highlighted as a global public health problem in developed and developing countries. The study aims to outline the toxicological potential, as well as to evaluate the physicochemical and phytochemical characterization of Garcínia cambogia, in order to contribute to the safe use of this plant. They were hemoenergetic, phytochemical and toxicological, aiming to characterize the quality and safety of extracts obtained from Garcínia cambogia. It was observed that the content of foreign material, pH, total ash and acid insoluble ash were within the established limits. The values for humidity were higher than allowed. Phytochemical screening showed negative results for flavonoids and tannins, and a positive result for saponins. For the in vivo acute toxicity test the extract was categorized as "category 5" (2000 to 2500 mg / kg), and the acute lethal toxicity – LD50% estimated at 2500 mg / kg, was considered to be non-toxic. In the evaluation of the systemic toxicity no significant differences were observed between the animals of the test group and those of the control group. No macroscopic changes were observed in the organs after 14 days of experiment, demonstrating absence of acute toxicity. With the results obtained it was possible to contribute to a more detailed knowledge of Garcínia cambogia, with the more detailed information of its toxicological potential.

Palavras-chave: Dieta Hiperlipídica; Flavonóides; HipercolesterolemiaAbstract: Flavonoids are phenolic compounds present in most plants. They play an important role in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, as hypocholesterolemic and antiatherogenic act as agents. This research aimed to study and compare the cholesterol-lowering effect of seed extract and grape skin (Vitis vinifera) in rats subjected to a high calorie diet (increased ration of 10% vegetable oil) in the 20-week period, from the 4th week of life. The sample consisted of 30 specimens and distributed between the Control -A (with only high calorie diet, n = 10) Experimental Group Grape Bark -B (high calorie diet + grape skin extract, n = 10) and experimental group Grape Seed -C (calorie diet + grape seed extract, n = 10). The results showed on average a reduction in serum total cholesterol by 14% and 17.65% in the control group, respectively, for the animals with diet based on bark and grape seed. There was no statistically significant difference in reducing cholesterol levels in the animals of both groups, so it is not possible to determine which grape component represents the best alternative in the prevention and control of hypercholesterolemia.
