Emilia Pardo Bazán recibió a lo largo de su vida muestras de admiración y respeto, y numerosos éxitos jalonaron su carrera literaria, pero también fue víctima de gran número de ataques públicos y privados. El trabajo recoge las criticas injustas que recibió a través de las páginas de los periódicos de la época y también las opiniones que quedaron plasmadas en las cartas que sus colegas (Menéndez Pelayo, Valera, Clarín, Pereda …) intercambiaban entre ellos. Doña Emilia nos ha dejado muestras en sus obras y en sus cartas privadas del dolor y la decepción que tales muestras de hostilidad le producían.
RESUMEN: La impersonalidad narrativa, tal como la entendía el movimiento naturalista a partir de Flaubert, consistía en eliminar de la narración las intervenciones del autor: la manifestación directa de sus sentimientos, los comentarios, los razonamientos, las digresiones de todo tipo para conseguir una narración lo más objetiva posible.La impersonalidad narrativa es una utopía, pero esa técnica naturalista fue útil en su época porque evitó las pesadas interrupciones de los escritores románticos o de escritores realistas como Fernán Caballero.Pardo Bazán conocía esa regla y la defendía, pero con frecuencia la transgredía. Este estudio analiza relatos de la autora en los que, de diversas formas, doña Emilia interviene en la narración y deja ver claramente cuál es su opinión sobre lo narrado.Las transgresiones de doña Emilia se deben en parte a su carácter: le gusta opinar sobre todo y demostrar sus conocimientos. Así se interpretaron en su tiempo. También traslucen sus creencias religiosas o políticas, pero con frecuencia enriquecen el relato, acercando la autora a sus lectores, que la reconocen en esos comentarios.
