A PAIR é definida como uma diminuição gradual da acuidade auditiva decorrente da exposição continuada a níveis elevados de pressão sonora, provocando lesão nas células ciliadas externas e internas no órgão de Corti. É caracterizada por perda neurossensorial, irreversível, quase sempre bilateral e simé-trica, não ultrapassando 40 dB (NA) nas freqüências graves e 75 dB (NA) nas freqüências agudas; manifesta-se, primeiramente, em 6000 Hz, 4000 Hz e/ou 3000 Hz, estendendo-se às freqüências de 8000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 1000 Hz, 500 Hz e 250Hz 1 . Entre os fatores que influenciam o risco de instalação da PAIR, destacam-se as caracterís-ticas físicas do ruído (tipo, espectro e nível de pressão sonora), o tempo de exposição e a suscetibilidade individual.A PAIR está entre as doenças do trabalho de maior prevalência, com agravante de tratar-se de uma doença irreversível. Segundo alguns autores 4,5 , acomete com mais freqüên-cia o setor metalúrgico, mecânico, gráfico, têxtil, químico/ petroquímico, transporte e indústria de alimento e bebida, atingindo, inicialmente, a freqüência de 6000 Hz.Considerando os elevados níveis de pressão sonora a que estão expostos os trabalhadores em marmorarias, associados à baixa adesão dos mesmos ao uso dos equipamentos de proteção individual (EPI), este trabalho busca identificar os efeitos auditivos causados pela exposição ocupacional a intensos níveis de pressão sonora presentes nas marmorarias do Distrito Federal. . Além do tipo e grau de perda, os traçados audiométricos foram classificados quanto à localização da perda, se unilateral ou bilateral. MÉTODOSAs variáveis dependentes foram ocupação, faixa etária e tempo de exposição ao ruído ocupacional. As informações foram armazenadas em banco de dados Microsoft AccessExcel e, para caracterização dos efeitos auditivos, realizou-se análise estatística (média, mediana, moda, desvio padrão e coeficiente de prevalência). A análise dos resultados foi feita por meio de análise univariada (ANOVA) e do teste estatístico T-test, relacionando-se as variáveis ocupação com tempo de serviço e perfil audiológico com tempo de exposição. RESULTADOSO grupo de trabalhadores avaliados (n= 152) caracterizou-se por predominância quase absoluta do sexo masculino (99%) com média de idade de 30 anos ±8,6, exercendo as atividades de acabador (27,6%) e ajudante geral (27,6%) e tempo médio de exposição ao ruído de 8,3 anos ± 6,8.Entre os trabalhadores avaliados, 48% apresentaram audiogramas alterados, predominando a PAIR (50%) e início de PAIR (41%). Considerou-se início de PAIR os limiares acima de 25 dB (NA) em pelo menos uma freqüência (4, 6 ou 8kHz) e em pelo menos uma orelha. As perdas neurossensoriais por outras etiologias representaram 5%, e as condutivas ou mistas 4%.Considerando apenas os casos de início de PAIR e de PAIR propriamente dita, em relação à localização (unilateral ou bilateral) da perda auditiva, observou-se que, entre as orelhas com diagnóstico de PAIR (n=35), 57,1% apresentaram perda bilateral, 17,1% em orelha direita e 25,7% em orelha esquerda.
