Toxicity of essential oils of Piper aduncum and Piper hispidinervum against Sitophilus zeamaisAbstract -Essential oils of Piper aduncum L. and Piper hispidinervum C. DC. (Piperaceae) were tested against Sitophilus zeamais Motsch. Contact, fumigant toxicity and topical effect were tested. Probit analysis was employed in evaluating the LC 50 and LD 50 response. Linear regression analysis and superposition of the bars (means error standard) were used for comparison of means percentage mortality. S. zeamais was more susceptible to the contact toxicity of the P. hispidinervum oil than P. aduncum oil with LC 50 values of 0.51 and 2.87 mL cm -2 of the oil, respectively. The mortality rate was nearly 100% at P. hispidinervum oil concentrations of 20 and 30%. With respect to the fumigant action, the weevil was more susceptible to the P. aduncum oil than to P. hispidinervum. A significant difference between oils mortality was observed only at 0.1 and 1.0% concentrations. For topical effect, similar values of the LD 50 were obtained for essential oils. However, the mortality was higher with P. aduncum. Essential oils of the P. aduncum and P. hispidinervum possess insecticidal effect from S. zeamais, but the responses varied according to concentration of the oils and exposure methods.

(Piperaceae) are mainly comprised of phenylpropanoid dillapiol, a group of substances widely known by their insecticide and synergistic properties. The abundance of P. aduncum in the state of Acre, and the need to control the bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma tingomarianus Bechyné motivated this study, which examined the toxic effects of P. aduncum oil on these beetles. Mortality rate, survival and foliar consumption were used to evaluate the effects of topical (LD 50 and LT 50 ) and contact (filter-paper) (LC 50 ) applications of different oil concentrations. The toxicity of P. aduncum oil to C. tingomarianus was high with: LC 50 of 0.06 ml/ cm 2 and LD 50 of 0.002 ml/mg of the insect. For contact (filter-paper) applications, the mortality rate was nearly 100% at oil concentrations of 1%, whereas for topical applications, the mortality rate changed from 5% to 30%. Oil concentrations of 2.5% and 5% significantly reduced the foliar consumption by the beetles. Oil concentrations above 5% greatly reduced the LT 50 . Contact application (filter-paper) of P. aduncum oils have, therefore, insecticide effects on C. tingomarianus, when applied at 0,04 % concentration. In case of topical application, these oils can cause physiological problems, when used at concentrations higher than 2.5%.KEY WORDS: Dillapiol, essential oil, botanical insecticide RESUMO -No óleo essencial de Piper aduncum L. (Piperaceae) predomina o fenilpropanóide dilapiol, com reconhecida ação inseticida e sinergista.
-The interference imposed the by weeds on corn decreases practically all vegetative characteristics. As consequence, the green ear and grain yield are also reduced. Losses due to the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) attack can reduce corn grain yield up to 34%. In general, weed and insect control issues are addressed separately in research papers. Nevertheless, interaction between weeds and insects may exist. This study aimed to evaluate green ear and corn grain yield response to weed and fall armyworm control. A completely randomized block design with split-plots and five replicates was adopted. Corn cultivar AG 1051 was grown under weedy conditions or with control by hand hoeings performed at 20 and 40 days after planting. Fall armyworm control (applied to subplots) was performed with sprays of water (control), deltamethrin (5g active ingredient ha -1 ); neem oil, at 0.5% (diluted in water), and neem leaf extract at 5%. Each product was sprayed three times, at seven-day intervals, starting at the 7 th day after planting, using 150 L ha -1 of the tank solution. Dry mass of the above-ground part, internode diameter, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, green ear yield and grain yield of corn were reduced due to the lack of weed control. Fall armyworm control in the weeded plots did not influence green ear yield and grain yield, except green mass of marketable, husked ears, which was reduced when the caterpillar was not controlled. Without weed control, neem extracts and deltamethrin sprays provided highest yields of number and total weight of green ears with husks, number and weight of marketable ears with husks and number of marketable ears without husks. The best results for husked ear mass and for grain yield were obtained with neem extract and deltamethrin, respectively. Keywords: Zea mays, Spodoptera frugiperda, Azadirachta indica, weed-pest interaction.RESUMO -A interferência imposta pelas plantas daninhas ao milho reduz praticamente todas as características vegetativas.

ABSTRACTEssential oils from Piper aduncum L., Piper hispidinervum C. DC. (Piperaceae) and Tanaecium nocturnum (Barb. Rodr.) Bur.& K. Shum (Bignoniaceae) were tested against Tenebrio molitor L., 1758 larvaes. Filter paper with different amounts of oils were employed for contact toxicity effects study. For topical effect study, aliquots of 5 mL of oils at different concentrations were applied on larvaes of the fifth instar. Mortality rate was used to evaluate the assays.
