In the search not only for differences but also for similarities between the two concepts, this article intends to demonstrate that the theory of the separation of powers, advocated by Aristotle, and later Montesquieu, leads to a prominent connection between ancient and modern democracy.
Ao considerar que os objetivos do governante são a conquista e a manutenção do poder, Nicolau Maquiavel sugere ser o estado de guerra uma situação permanente na arte de governar. Este artigo aborda o pensamento político do autor, a partir de sua análise sobre a guerra. Visa apreender o sentido que ele confere à política e os fundamentos de uma teoria sobre a guerra, construída com base no diálogo com as experiências dos antigos e as circunstâncias históricas de seu tempo. O trabalho está estruturado nos seguintes tópicos: o diálogo de Maquiavel com os antigos; a dessacralização da política; e o diálogo dos modernos com Maquiavel.
