Dans le monde romain, d’une part, la structure de la nomenclature reflète strictement le statut des personnes et, d’autre part, les dénominations des élites sont conditionnées par les appartenances familiales et les alliances ; dès lors, l’examen des noms de personne permet d’étudier différents aspects de l’histoire sociale. L’accent a été mis d’abord sur la prosopographie équestre et sénatoriale d’après quelques généalogies bien documentées ; ensuite, l’étude porte sur les phénomènes d’acculturation selon l’histoire des cités, dans le cadre de la répartition des citoyens et des pérégrins en Narbonnaise, Gaule Belgique et Germanie inférieure, puis dans celui de l’identité religieuse des dévots de Mars et de Mercure en Germanie supérieure.
