Guyonnet (Marie-Hélène). — Le Midi «barbare et obscurantiste». La chasse aux petits oiseaux en Provence.
Dans le courant du XIXe siècle, une violente campagne se développe contre les chasseurs de petits oiseaux du Midi de la France et en particulier de la Provence. La concentration des attaques est corrélée avec deux facteurs essentiels : d'une part avec certains stéréotypes relatifs aux mœurs des populations du Midi ; d'autre part avec l'émergence d'un modèle de pratique cynégétique qui entend proscrire l'usage des pièges. En voulant défendre la capture au gluau et la chasse au poste des petits oiseaux, les Provençaux vont, paradoxalement, se faire les principaux artisans de la diffusion d'un stéréotype du chasseur méridional caractérisé par une passion immodérée pour la chasse aux oiseaux et par le goût d'une chasse sans fatigue. De nombreux écrits témoignent de la dialectique identitaire qui a produit l'image caricaturée du «chasseur provençal».

Résumé Depuis la création par Frédéric Mistral, en 1896, du Museon arlaten , la muséographie provençale doit une grande partie de sa vitalité (attestée par l’existence d’une quarantaine de musées) à des associations proches du Félibrige. Poursuivant l’œuvre ethnographique du poète, celles-ci contribuent à la folklorisation de l’image de la Provence et à sa « réduction » à la Provence arlésienne. Une telle hégémonie de la référence à Mistral a longtemps fait obstacle à l’émergence d’une ethnographie véritablement scientifique de la Provence. Musées félibréens, musées de sociétés savantes, écomusées reflètent la variété des conceptions du régionalisme et de l’articulation entre micro-région, région et nation française.
