Les travaux de reconstitution paléoenvironnementale conduits dans le vallon du Frau au nord-est du massif du Cantal apportent des informations nouvelles dans un secteur géographique peu documenté. Les études archéologiques menées sur ce vallon ont été complétées par des analyses paléoécologiques menées sur une carotte de sédiments extraite de la tourbière du Frau. L'interprétation des résultats des analyses permet de montrer comment les sociétés humaines ont progressivement étendu leurs activités agro-pastorales dès la mise en place de la tourbière au Néolithique final et modifié leur environnement en particulier par les défrichements et par le feu. La seconde rupture dans l'histoire des relations entre ces sociétés et le milieu se place au Moyen Âge central. Le xiii e siècle marque en effet le début d'une période de construction du paysage tel qu'on le connaît aujourd'hui avec une extension maximale de l'emprise humaine. De nombreux hameaux et diverses structures agro-pastorales sont ainsi associés à la quasi-disparition de la forêt, les espaces pâturés et cultivés gagnant du terrain. Cette extension des activités agro-pastorales semble affecter le fonctionnement hydro-sédimentaire du bassin versant avec des conséquences différentes selon les périodes : mise en place de la tourbière, hausse de l'activité morphogénique sur les versants, dégradation de la végétation et des sols.
