Kenau en Magdalena, het nieuwste project van historica Els Kloek, is een samenvatting van en aanvulling op haar eigen werk over deze twee heldinnen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Het is geschreven naar aanleiding van de speelfilm Kenau, die het verhaal vertelt van deze heldin van het beleg van Haarlem in 1572. Magdalena Moons, de vrouw die Spaanse legerleider Francisco Valdez in 1574 overhaalde Leiden niet aan te vallen, speelt een bijrol in deze film. Dit bijzonder vormgegeven boek is echter bovenal een verslag van een zoektocht naar de rol van vrouwen tijdens de gruwelijke burgeroorlog die het begin van de Nederlandse Opstand kenmerkte. Kenau en Magdalena spelen hierin belangrijke bijrollen, zij zijn voorbeelden van vrouwen tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Kenau en Magdalena bestaat uit drie helder geschreven delen. In het eerste deel staat 'oorlog' centraal en stelt Kloek de vraag hoe vrouwen tot nu toe zijn bestudeerd als onderdeel van de vroegmoderne oorlogsvoering. In vier hoofdstukken beschrijft zij de rol van seks en sekse tijdens oorlog en het begin van de Nederlandse Opstand. In plaats van het samenvatten van de bestaande, recente literatuur over de Opstand (bijvoorbeeld Simon Groenveld, De Tachtigjarige Oorlog (Zutphen 2008) en Petra Groen e.a., De Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Van opstand naar geregelde oorlog, 1568-1648 (Amsterdam 2013)) richt Kloek zich, zoals de titel van haar boek aangeeft, meer op vrouwen. Zo gaat ze dieper in op ketterij, soldatenvrouwen, geweld tegen vrouwen en de verschillende landvoogdessen die de Nederlanden in de zestiende eeuw bestuurden. Hoewel ze toegeeft dat er nu meer aandacht onder militair historici is voor vrouwen, wil Kloek haar publiek vooral overtuigen dat vrouwen een grotere rol spelen in oorlogen dan tot nu toe is onderkend. Een nobele, maar niet altijd even geslaagde, zoektocht is het resultaat. Zo wil Kloek vrouwen enerzijds uit hun slachtofferrol halen, maar kan ze niet heen om de bronnen die juist het oorlogsgeweld tegen vrouwen benadrukken. Anderzijds wil ze aantonen dat vrouwen als Margaretha van Parma een belangrijke rol vervulden in de geschiedenis van de Opstand, maar juist de landvoogdes is altijd onderdeel geweest van de historiografie over de Opstand. Het tweede deel gaat in op het leven van Kenau. Door te beweren dat er veel meer vrouwen dan mannen in de stad waren in 1572, stelt Kloek de bredere vraag of vrouwen nu wel of niet meevochten tegen het Spaanse leger buiten de stadspoorten tijdens het
