El artículo presenta resultados de una investigación realizada entre 1989 y 1991 en un contexto rural del estado de Morelos, a partir de un análisis centrado fundamentalmente en la interacción entre los agentes de salud y las mujeres, tomando en cuenta los principales elementos de las trayectorias de socialización de las mujeres. Los autores plantean que el efecto de los programas de salud y de planificación familiar y la consecuente medicalización de la procreación han convertido el marco de la atención materno-infantil en un espacio determinante en el proceso de toma de decisión de las mujeres en lo referente a la atención de sus embarazos y partos, y a la anticoncepción. Partiendo de un enfoque metodológico cuanti-cualitativo se identificaron diversas trayectorias reproductivas cuyo análisis permite, por un lado, identificar la intensidad de las transacciones de las mujeres con las instituciones de salud, su comunidad y su pareja y, por otro, caracterizar la trayectoria social de las mujeres como un factor fundamental de distinción en su integración al sistema biomédico.
