Susceptibility to hydrogen-induced cracking of API 5L B and X52MS low-carbon steels in NACE 177-A, 177-B, and 284-B solutions has been investigated by the present work. A metallographic analysis of these steels was performed before and after NACE TM0284 standard testing. Corrosion products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray dispersive energy spectrometry, which were subsequently identified by X-ray diffraction. Thus it was found that pH directly affects the solubility of corrosion products and hydrogen permeation. Both steels showed generalized corrosion in solution 177-A, and a discontinuous film was formed on their surfaces in solution 177-B; however, only the API 5L B steel failed the HIC test and exhibited greater crack length ratio in solution 177-A. In solution 284-B whose pH is higher, the steels exhibited thick mackinawite films with no internal cracking.
publicado na web em 18/01/2018 A THERMODINAMIC CORROSION STUDY OF CARBON STEELS IN HYDROGEN SULFIDE -EXPLORING CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM CONCEPTS. This study addresses an inherent problem to the oil and natural gas exploration and production industry, the corrosion of pipes and tanks by H 2 S. H 2 S with water emulsified in the oil or H 2 S with the water vapor mixed in the gas, they make the acid environment leading to corrosion. This is commonly manifested by the formation of insoluble sulfides on the surface of the carbon steels destined for this purpose. The evolution of the corrosion process depends on the composition and physicochemical characteristics of sulfide film. In this context, we intend to interpret the conditions of formation and precipitation of iron sulfides as a function of pH, using concepts of chemical equilibrium, electrode potential and electrochemical cell that are part of the subjects of chemistry. Keywords: hydrogen embrittlement; sour corrosion; carbon steels; teaching corrosion.
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FRAGILIZATION BY HYDROGEN OF API 5L B AND X52MS STEELS CARBON Abstract In this work a corrosion study of the API 5L B and X52MS steels in acid solutions from TM0284 and TM0177 NACE standards was developed. The sensitivity to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) was determined in each medium. Corrosion products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray dispersive energy spectrometry and subsequently identified by X-ray diffraction. It is concluded that the pH directly affects the solubility of the corrosion products and the hydrogen permeation. In 177-A solution, both steels showed generalized corrosion. In 177-B solution, a discontinuous film on both steels was observed. Only API 5L B steel did not pass any HIC test. In 284-B solution of higher pH, the steels presented thick films and the cracking by hydrogen was not observed..
