En este trabajo se propone el diseño y la optimización del timón de un surcador. El objetivo principal es diseñar el elemento con una adecuada resistencia estructural y características geométricas que permitan la reducción de su masa sin comprometer su resistencia. El diseño del surcador se realizó en un paquete de CAD tomando como referencia dimensiones de implementos similares. En primera instancia, un estudio teórico-numérico del estado de esfuerzo normal del diseño inicial del surcador sometido a carga se llevó a cabo. El análisis de resultados mostró una alta correlación (R2) entre los obtenidos numéricamente en comparación con los teóricos. Posteriormente, el proceso de optimización del timón se realizó empleando dos metodologías distintas: 1) un Diseño Central Compuesto (DCC) en combinación con Metodología de Superficie de Respuesta (MSR), métodos de exploración integrados en el software de elemento finito; y 2) el método de optimización de Templado Simulado (TS). Ambas metodologías ofrecen resultados similares logrando una reducción de masa de hasta 25 % respecto al diseño inicial.
