No Estado de São Paulo, além das culturas comerciais que destinam sua produção às indústrias de transformação ou aos mercados hortifrutigranjeiros, a mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) é muito difundida em culturas denominadas de "fundo de quintal". Nesse caso, muitas variedades são cultivadas e utilizadas precipuamente para consumo doméstico, tendo o presente trabalho por objetivo avaliar a amplitude de variação do seu teor de ácido cianídrico (HCN). Foram analisadas raízes de 206 variedades originárias de uma coleta sistemática realizada em 126 municípios paulistas, utilizando-se o método de Liebig, com maceração por 24 horas. Os resultados mostraram que a amplitude máxima de variação do ácido cianídrico foi de 16 a 482 mg.kg-1 na polpa crua das raízes. A maioria das variedades (67,0%) apresentou até 100 mg.kg-1 de HCN, que, apesar de alto em relação aos citados na literatura, sugere que possa ser considerado o limite superior de segurança para variedades de mesa.
Procurando explorar ao máximo o potencial produtivo de três variedades de cana-de-açúcar com diferentes características agrotecnológicas, foram conduzidos de 1981 a 1984 dois experimentos em dois solos paulistas. Para tanto, estudou-se a interação entre dois espaçamentos (parcelas), três variedades (subparcelas) e oito adubações (subsubparcelas), num delineamento em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. A adubação na cana-planta constou de: N0K3, N1K3, N2K3, N3K3, N2K0, N2K1, N2K2 e N2K3; N1 e K1 = 70; N2 e K2 = 140 e N3 e K3 = 210 kg/ha de N e K2O, além de 120 kg/ha de P2O5, comum a todos os tratamentos. Nos dois solos, ocorreram diferenças significativas de produtividade de colmos e de sacarose devidas a adubação, variedades e espaçamentos, não havendo interações da adubação com variedades e com espaçamentos. Nos casos com respostas significativas, as doses estimadas para produtividade máxima de cana foram, respectivamente, 165 e 148 kg/ha de N e K2O para o solo LR e 180 kg/ha de N para o solo LE; para a produtividade de sacarose, as doses foram, respectivamente, 153 e 104 kg/ha de N e K2O no solo LE e 128 kg/ha de K2O no LR. Como houve decréscimo do teor de sacarose com a aplicação das doses mais elevadas de N e, principalmente, de K, a necessidade dos fertilizantes para obtenção de produtividade máxima de sacarose foi menor que aquela verificada na produtividade de colmos. Nas socas, fez-se aplicação única de 100-30-120 kg/ha de N, P2O5 e K2O. Os dados de produção total (cana-planta + socas) mostraram que os efeitos do N e K foram semelhantes aos da cana-planta para as produtividades de colmos e de sacarose. O espaçamento de 1,20 m proporcionou maior produção de cana por área que o de 1,50 m (LR = 14% e LE = 7% na soma de cana-planta e socas) e menor produção por metro linear (LR = - 18% e LE = - 10%). As variedades IAC58-480 e IAC64-257 apresentaram maior produtividade de sacarose que a IAC52-150 na soma de cana-planta e socas: foram de 17 e 12%, respectivamente, as diferenças no solo LR, enquanto no LE as duas diferiram da IAC52-150 em 12%; no LR, a IAC58-480 foi superior à IAC64-257 (5%). As três variedades diferiram entre si quanto ao teor de sacarose, sendo a IAC58-480 superior à IAC52-150 (5%) e, esta, superior à IAC64-257 (2%).
Em Campinas, SP, nos anos agrícolas de 1982/83, 1983/84 e 1984/85, avaliaram-se oito diferentes clones de mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) selecionados para mesa quanto à produtividade de raízes e ramas, índice de colheita, cozimento culinário, teor de ácido cianídrico e cor da polpa das raízes. Os experimentos, instalados no início das chuvas (setembro/outubro) e colhidos nove meses após o plantio, foram conduzidos em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Entre o material estudado, os clones IAC 59-210, de polpa branca (obtido por autofecundação do cv. IAC Mantiqueira) e IAC 289-70, de polpa amarela (originário do cruzamento do cv. SRT 797 - Ouro do Vale, com o cv. SRT 1 - Vassourinha Paulista), mostraram, no conjunto de caracteres avaliados, o melhor comportamento, superando o 'IAC Jaçanã' e o 'IAC 14-18', utilizados como testemunhas. O clone IAC 289-70 destacou-se pela facilidade de cozimento culinário, baixa concentração de HCN, alto índice de colheita, produtividade média de 18,7 t/ha e polpa amarela das raízes, indicando a presença de pigmentos carotenóides. A característica mais relevante do IAC 59-210 foi a maior produtividade média, 20,6 t/ha, em magnitude.
Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar caracteres agronômicos e morfológicos de onze híbridos de pimentão, sob condições de cultivo protegido. O experimento foi desenvolvido no outono/inverno de 1996, na região de Campinas, SP. Os tratamentos compreenderam onze híbridos, os quais foram agrupados de acordo com a cor do fruto, sendo quatro vermelhos (Luis, Fresco, Juncal e XPH-14187), dois amarelos (Indalo e Rupia), dois alaranjados (Mandarin e Orange Wonder), dois roxos (Cardinal e Lilac) e um creme (Ivory). Foram avaliados os caracteres: produção por planta ao longo de 100 dias de colheita e peso, comprimento, largura e espessura de polpa dos 5 primeiros frutos comerciais de cada planta. Os híbridos Fresco e Luis tiveram maior produção por planta, enquanto que os menores valores foram observados em 'Lilac' e 'Orange Wonder'. Os demais híbridos apresentaram desempenho intermediário. Encontrou-se maior espessura de polpa nos híbridos Ivory, Orange Wonder e Rupia, que diferiram estatisticamente de 'Juncal', 'Luis' e 'Cardinal'. Na comparação dentro dos grupos de fruto de cores vermelha e amarela sobressaíram-se, respectivamente, os híbridos Fresco e Rupia.
