AbstractIn the course of the first century of Atlantic Spanish, languages were in contact in many situations. The Canary Islands is one episode in the process of the lexical incorporation of the Spanish language in the New World. The analysis of the lexicon in Canary Islands texts provides us with key factors in the selection process in an urban society in which mainly Spanish and Portuguese populations lived together (1496-1600). The struggle between Spanish and the incorporation of indigenous words is an identity factor in the history of American Spanish. The Canary Islands add Portuguese loans to this process, as they appear in the chronicle and official texts together with Spanish and indigenous words. The quantitative and the qualitative analysis allow us to know the most significant keys to each contribution, depending on the documents.
The history of the incorporation of indigenous loanwords into Spanish texts has been studied from various perspectives. The present paper introduces a method to unify different conclusions related to transmission processes, changes in the meaning and the quantification of vocabulary. Based on these elements, we develop a gradation index to measure loanword occurrence in Spanish documents for a given author, period or word group. The method's application to two administrative texts from the last third of the sixteenth century in Colombia and Ecuador demonstrates its feasibility, particularly regarding the possible differentiation between indigenous loanwords used to describe prehispanic culture with only incidental value and indigenous terminology that is actually incorporated into the Spanish language. Contact between languages results in the conversion of new terms from one language into another and the consequent emergence of lexical loans. Each document is converted into a written verbal production in which vocabulary is used through negotiation between the transmitter and the receiver. Palabras clave: tradición discursiva, Relaciones Geográficas de Indias, corpus, americanismo léxicoThis article examines the Geographical Relations of the Indies (RGI) through four classification criteria used for other discursive traditions: non -fragmented texts, with diachronic, diatopic, diaphasic and diastrática references that inform orality. The final objective is to demonstrate by means of a case study that the RGIs provide a novelty as an administrative and descriptive text drafted collectively, and as material for a corpus on lexical Americanisms, shows an abundance of examples of its heterogeneity and diffusion since the century XVI. Through a qualitative and quantitative methodology, these criteria are applied to twenty RGI (1546-1597). The result obtained shows the partial fulfillment of the criteria of classification, and the possibility of differentiating by linguistic areas the use of Americanisms. This work is a contribution to the theoretical framework in which a possible taxonomy of the colonial texts is based.
The main objective of this investigation is to examine with textual support the use of the vocabulary of color during the Golden Period through the investigation that it is a medieval heritage or a neologism. This chromatic terminology was little used during the thirteenth century and in the following centuries its use is multiplied by the communication needs of a society that demands descriptive information on many social, cultural and economic issues, as happens with historiographic documents. To this end, a quantitative investigation has been designed in three phases: (a) search for chromatic voices that designate six selected colors; (b) determination of the first documentation of this group of voices; and (c) quantitative analysis to find a trend regarding the silver duality. For the search of these empirical references, the Diachronic Corpus of Spanish has been used as a data bank to collect textual examples on the chromatic vocabulary extracted from different historiographic sources. The result is the presentation of 100 terms with their respective empirical testimonies that reflect the continuity of the medieval heritage in the colors white, black and red, while formal neologisms are very frequent for the rest.
