En 1998 tuvo lugar la privatización total de Endesa y el inicio de la liberalización del sector eléctrico español. Este artículo analiza, desde una perspectiva temporal que abarca los años 1988 a 2004, la adaptación de Endesa a ambos acontecimientos: los cambios en su estrategia, en su estructura y en la evolución de los indicadores de rentabilidad y productividad de su actividad tradicional en España. Esta evolución se compara con la del sector eléctrico español. Los cambios estructurales y estratégicos se concretan en la transformación de la empresa pública Endesa en una multinacional que adopta una estrategia de diversificación y crecimiento, adaptando paulatinamente su estructura organizativa a estos objetivos. Tras la privatización, los cambios en su indicador de productividad global y en su rentabilidad denotan una pérdida de eficiencia respecto al sector. Se concluye que la privatización ha tenido un doble efecto contrapuesto: crecimiento internacional acompañado de una pérdida de eficiencia de su actividad tradicional en España.
