Contexto: el sentido de la audición es esencial en el aprendizaje como el habla por imitación y desarrollarse socialmente; existe un importante porcentaje de niños que padecen sordera o hipoacusia, siendo idiopáticas el 40% de casos o poseen un factor genético, ambiental o mixto en el 60%.Objetivo: evaluar la capacidad de los padres para detectar tempranamente problemas auditivos en sus hijos Sujetos y métodos: niños entre 0 a 18 meses e infantes con edades comprendidas entre 19 a 36 meses Resultados: los progenitores detectaron hipoacusia en 72,7% de niños entre 0 a 18 meses y 93,3% en infantes con edades comprendidas entre 19 a 36 meses; mediante audiometría con potenciales evocados puede detectarse hipoacusia en el 70% de niños con factores de riesgo en edades entre 0 a 18 meses y 92,3% en niños con edades entre 19 a 36 meses. El uso de la audiometría con potenciales evocados permite descubrir hipoacusia en niños sin factores de riesgo en el 100% de casos en menores de 3 años. Lo señalado confirma que los padres de niños entre 18 a 36 meses pueden percibir una hipoacusia en niños con factores de riesgo en mayor porcentaje que la audiometría, diferencia estadísticamente significativa; respecto a los niños con edades entre 0 a 18 meses, con y sin factores de riesgo y en niños de 19 a 36 meses con factores de riesgo, la audiometría es el estándar de oro para detección de hipoacusia.Conclusión: los progenitores, con el debido entrenamiento, pueden detectar hipoacusias con alta precisión, en niños mayores de 18 meses.
