El presente estudio se realizó en Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas de julio a noviembre de 2016. El objetivo fue realizar un diagnóstico dasométrico así como de las condiciones físicas y sanitarias del arbolado de alineación en la ciudad. Mediante un muestreo aleatorio en las colonias, se determinaron las especies y número de árboles, así como altura, diámetro, cobertura arbórea, daños y afectaciones a la infraestructura urbana. Se contabilizó un total de 7539 árboles, distribuidos en 38 familias, 88 géneros y 114 especies; 74% de los individuos son introducidos; la mayor parte de los árboles cuentan con condiciones físicas y sanitarias de regulares a buenas, los daños más frecuentes son el levantamiento de banquetas, raíces expuestas y la interferencia con el cableado aéreo. A través de este estudio se confirma la importancia del papel que desempeña el arbolado en las ciudades. Para asegurar la capacidad de proveer servicios ambientales así como garantizar su sustentabilidad, es necesario incorporar programas de manejo integral de arbolado urbano a nivel municipal. Finalmente, es importante resaltar que en las ciudades son más evidentes los daños provocados a la naturaleza debido a la urbanización mal planeada y el acelerado crecimiento demográfico. Es indudable que los ciudadanos son los principales modeladores de cambio en el ambiente urbano, influenciando de manera directa su desarrollo.
Antecedentes y Objetivos: El bosque tropical caducifolio (BTC) destaca por su valor utilitario, pero la información sobre el uso de las plantas por la población mestiza es limitada. Este estudio describe el valor de uso e importancia ecológica de las especies arbóreas nativas del BTC secundario cercano a comunidades campesinas en la Reserva Forestal Villa Allende, Chiapas, México.Métodos: La información etnobotánica se obtuvo por la técnica de lista libre y se complementó con un inventario florístico a través del método de parcelas. Se calculó el índice de valor de uso como medida de la importancia cultural y se relacionó con la importancia ecológica de cada especie útil, usando valores relativos de frecuencia, densidad y dominancia.Resultados clave: Se registraron 103 especies útiles de angiospermas, 77% de ellas son de uso múltiple y corresponden a 10 categorías de uso, siendo los más destacados: combustible (73), postes (68) y construcción (63). Eysenhardtia adenostylis (1.36) y Acacia pennatula (1.29) fueron las especies con el valor de uso más alto, aunque la mayoría (84%) registró bajos valores de uso (≤0.3). Asimismo, las especies con mayor valor de uso poseen bajos valores de importancia ecológica (IVI ≤0.69). El valor de uso por especie no se relacionó con el valor de importancia ecológica, excepto porque la dominancia del bosque de 19 años de abandono se correlacionó positivamente con el valor de uso (rs=0.30, P=0.04) y la relación significativa entre la densidad con el valor de uso ornamental (rs=0.41, P=0.03). Con base en el valor de uso se recomendaron nueve especies potenciales para conservación y restauración del BTC en la zona estudiada.Conclusiones: El BTC secundario en la Reserva Forestal Villa Allende, Chiapas, provee de especies arbóreas útiles para satisfacer las necesidades básicas de las comunidades, aunque la importancia cultural de éstas no depende de su importancia ecológica.
El presente estudio se desarrolló en dos comunidades tsotsiles, pertenecientes a la familia lingüística maya, con el objetivo de determinar los conocimientos y las percepciones de los agricultores sobre los insectos perjudiciales de la milpa. Con base en un enfoque cualitativo, la información se recopiló mediante entrevistas, visitando parcelas y un taller en cada comunidad. Los vocablos que se utilizan para referirse a los insectos y otros artrópodos son bik¢tal chonetik y chanul, para referirse a los que perjudican a sus cultivos agregan el término slajes. Se reconocieron 19 insectos perjudiciales para la milpa, dos de los cuales (Atta mexicana y Helicoverpa zea) son a la vez comestibles. Los agricultores identificaron que la presencia y abundancia de insectos se relaciona con factores como la sequia. El escaso conocimiento sobre los ciclos de vida y enemigos naturales de los insectos puede obstaculizar los esfuerzos para un control biológico de insectos plaga.
