Este artículo propone discutir la idea del diseño como algo único y universal al presentar los avances de un estudio etnográfico realizado en una cooperativa de cartoneros (recuperadores urbanos) localizada en el Gran Buenos Aires. Partiendo del análisis de una escena etnográfica, reconstruimos las tramas que tejen las experiencias cartoneras al customizar materiales previamente descartados y crear nuevas tecnologías para su tratamiento, abriendo nuevas perspectivas sobre las prácticas de diseño desarrolladas desde los sectores populares.
Estas prácticas de (re)diseño involucran la experimentación sensomotriz con los materiales descartados y la producción de conocimientos específicos puestos en práctica a través de la palabra, el cuerpo y las emociones. De esta forma, los integrantes de la cooperativa (re)diseñan también los modos y locus de existencia política en el campo de la gestión de residuos para posicionarse como actores expertos en la gestión y tratamiento sostenible de residuos industriales. En síntesis, el artículo se focaliza en el proceso de resignificación que implica la conversión de un material de descarte en un prototipo de producto. De este modo, el diseño cartonero resulta una práctica situada que responde a una realidad y a una forma de existencia específicas, y emerge para contestar y desobedecer a lo ya instituido y legitimado, consolidándose como una herramienta política fundamental para los miembros de la cooperativa dentro del ámbito de la gestión de residuos.
