El objetivo de este artículo es continuar nuestro estudio sobre las relaciones culturales italo-japonesas a través del estudio de la prensa ilustrada, concretamente la publicación periódica L’Illustrazione Italiana. Cronológicamente el artículo se centra en el periodo Taisho (1912- 1926), considerado como una época de consolidación de la modernización del Japón Meiji (1868-1912), en el que se consolidan los lazos bilaterales entre Italia y Japón, con testimonios como la visita oficial a Italia del príncipe heredero Hirohito en 1921. Siguiendo con la tendencia del periodo Meiji (1868-1912), el Japón tradicional y su arte siguió despertando una gran fascinación, que se refleja en diversos reportajes y en el denominado fenómeno del Japonismo.
En la Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo de Brescia encontramos una serie de obras de arte japonesas. Una parte, perteneció al diplomático Fé d’Ostiani (1823-1905) y otro conjunto, que fue mostrado en la Exposición de arte contemporáneo Okura en Roma en 1930, fue regalado a Benito Mussolini (1883-1945)
Italia fue una nación con estrechas relaciones diplomáticas y culturales con Japón. Entre los italianos que sirvieron de puente entre la cultura nipona y la europea abordamos en este artículo una aproximación a la figura de Gabriele d’Annunzio (1863-1938) que fue un literato, militar y político italiano, símbolo del Decadentismo. En su trayectoria mostró un destacado interés por el Japonismo y el arte del Extremo Oriente. Su principal aportación en esta materia fue su obra Il piacere (El placer) de 1889. Sus controvertidas ideas políticas fueron la base para el movimiento artístico del Futurismo.
