« Un pays sans mémoire n’a pas de futur. » L’auteur suggère que faire du futur l’objet privilégié et affligé de la mémoire – signification peut-être étrangère au titre de la trilogie de Bion – pourrait guider les choix au niveau individuel et collectif, conditionner les politiques et les plans de développement, sauvegarder le territoire et le patrimoine artistique ; et offrir une attention constante à l’écologie de l’esprit, ce bien précieux auquel il semble que l’on ait parfois cessé de penser et que tout semble concourir à endommager.
Cet article fait appel à la notion clinique de trauma comme critère historiographique pour comprendre la modernité et ses mythologies. Si la réécriture du syntagme « trauma » – au croisement entre psychanalyse et neurobiologie, anthropologie culturelle et philosophie de l’esprit – est la signature de la contemporaneité, il est tout à fait légitime de concevoir la Shoah comme une césure radicale, historique et épistémologique. Jamais auparavant n’avait été projeté et réalisé un système bureaucratico-industriel à ce point efficace pour la dévastation de l’idée même d’humanité. Auschwitz a été, dans ses modalités les plus radicales, l’espace liminal entre humain et non-humain. C’est précisément à l’extrême bord de l’abysse que le bourreau partage avec sa victime l’annihilation de l’humanité. Cette étude rencontre donc une question qui marque depuis toujours la construction sociale de la subjectivité : le périmètre de l’humain et les relations entre identité, altérité et reconnaissance.
