RESUMOobjetivo: Avaliar uso de jogos eletrônicos (videogames, jogos de computador e internet) em uma amostra de universitários. método: Um questionário a respeito de comportamentos relacionados ao uso de jogos eletrônicos, contendo a escala Problem Videogame Playing (PVP), foi aplicado em 100 alunos da Universidade de São Paulo (USP). resultados: A maioria (83%) relatou ter jogado no último ano, dentre a qual 81,9% eram homens, 51,8% jogavam de 1 a 2 horas por sessão; 74,4% afirmaram que jogar não interfere em seus relacionamentos sociais e 60,5%, que o uso de jogos violentos não influencia sua agressividade. Os estudantes dividiram-se entre jogadores ocasionais e frequentes, diferenciando-se por duração de cada sessão, jogo preferido, motivação para jogar, e influência do jogo na vida social. Cerca de 5% relataram só parar de jogar quando interrompidos, normalmente jogar mais de 4 horas por sessão e se relacionar mais com amigos virtuais, sugerindo maior envolvimento com a atividade. Na escala PVP, 15,8% da amostra preencheu mais da metade dos itens, indicando consequências adversas associadas ao uso dos jogos eletrônicos. conclusão: Observou-se que o uso de jogos eletrônicos é comum entre os estudantes da USP e que uma parcela apresenta problemas relacionados ao excesso de jogo. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to assess the internal consistency and to perform a factor analysis of the Brazilian version of the SOGS - South Oaks Gambling Screen - scale, as well as its ability to discriminate between different profiles of gamblers. METHOD: Two hundred and seventeen subjects were enrolled in the study: 46 gamblers under treatment at the Gamblers Treatment Unit of PROAD - Program for Orientation and Attention of Dependent Persons- of the Federal University of São Paulo; 96 social gamblers and 75 subjects screened as pathological gamblers recruited at the local Jockey Club, video poker and bingo clubs. RESULTS: Differences in the score means of all three groups were statistically significant and were able to discriminate between social gamblers, pathological gamblers interviewed in a gambling site and the clinical sample. The internal consistency of the 20-item scale measured by Cronbach's alpha was 0.9304. Factor analysis resulted in a three-dimensional solution accounting for 58,6% of the total variance: a first factor composed mainly by questions related to the consequences of gambling; a second factor encompassing questions related to the gambling behavior of pathological gamblers; and a third and less expressive factor involving only two questions, probably a hybrid one of difficult interpretation. CONCLUSIONS: The Brazilian version of the SOGS was a useful screen to discriminate Brazilian pathological gamblers from social gamblers as well as to differentiate clinical pathological from non-clinical pathological gamblers, and to identify different levels of severity.

In the present study Brazilian gamblers from different settings were compared on sociodemographic characteristics, gambling the behavior, and use of drugs. The SOGS was administered to 171 subjects at bingo (BG), video poker (VP), and horse-racing clubs (HR) of São Paulo. BG concentrated most women, VP the youngest and single gamblers, and HR the lowest income subjects. More VP than HR or BG gamblers reported taking time off work to gamble, as well as returning another day to win back lost money. They also had a higher number of scorable responses on the SOGS. The differences observed suggest that VP gamblers bear a greater risk of developing a pathological gambling pattern. The authors suggest that measures should be taken aimed at the prevention of pathological gambling, particularly among the young population of video poker gamblers.

ResumoO domínio de ferramentas digitais pode ser importante via de inclusão social. O presente estudo visou investigar o uso que 60 adolescentes em situação de vulnerabilidade social, participantes das atividades do Projeto Quixote, fazem da internet e de jogos eletrônicos. Procurou-se caracterizar tipo de atividade, frequência, duração, companhia, local, fi nalidade do uso de internet e de jogos eletrônicos, incluindo difi culdades encontradas no manejo da rede. A maioria dos adolescentes entrevistados está na escola, usa internet e jogos eletrônicos, interagindo com amigos e familiares, principalmente para comunicação e entretenimento. Os participantes relataram que aprenderam a usar sozinhos e que sabem de riscos associados a essas práticas. Entretanto, os resultados mostram que eles se expõem a condutas de risco. Diferenças de gênero foram observadas. Discute-se a necessidade de capacitar pais e educadores para estimular uso que desenvolva competências visando inclusão social assim como a importância de acompanhar o uso para prevenir prática inadequada ou excessiva. ObjectiveTo investigate the frequency of pathological gambling among alcohol and other substance abusers who sought specialized treatment. Methods Seventy-four outpatients from three different substance abuse treatment services were interviewed. The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) scale was used for the diagnosis of pathological gambling. The diagnosis of alcohol and other substances abuse was established according to the DSM-IV criteria and the Short Alcohol Dependence Data (SADD) scale. The Portuguese version of the Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ) scale was used to detect psychiatric symptoms and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) for depressive symptoms. Average scores obtained from the application of these scales were compared using the Student t-test. Results All subjects met the criteria for drug abuse, 61.6% met the alcohol dependence criteria, 60.3% for cocaine/crack, and 34.2% for cannabis. According to the SOGS scale, the majority of drug addicts (70.3%) were classified as social gamblers, 10.8% as problem gamblers and 18.9% as pathological gamblers. Psychiatric and depression symptoms were found in the sample. Pathological gambling patients showed more depression symptoms than non-pathological gambling patients. Conclusions A high frequency of pathological gambling was found among the drug addicts interviewed. It is emphasized the importance of investigating pathological gambling among patients under treatment of drug abuse and to include strategies for the treatment of this disorder.

Foram escolhidos de forma proporcional e aleatória 10 setores censitários da cidade de Santos.  Em cada setor foi realizado a aplicação do </span><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; color: windowtext;">questionário<span class="longtext1"><span style="line-height: 200%; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-size: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial;"> <em>Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale<span style="text-transform: uppercase;"> (News - </span>Brasil<span style="text-transform: uppercase;">).</span></em></span></span> Para coletada de dados foram abordados 30 indivíduos de cada setor avaliado, sendo estas pessoas que circulavam na rua e se identificavam como moradoras do setor, assim, a amostra foi composta por 300 indivíduos. Na análise dos dados foi utilizada análise fatorial exploratória a fim de reduzir os parâmetros avaliados em fatores compostos. Foi verificada a diferença dos fatores observados em cada região do município por meio do teste de <span class="longtext1"><span style="line-height: 200%; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-size: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial;">Kruskal-Wallis. Houve diferenças significativas entre os setores de maior e menor nível socioeconômico. O setor de maior nível socioeconômico apresenta a </span></span>percepção positiva sobre a proximidade dos estabelecimentos, a existência de facilitadores para a prática de atividades físicas e a segurança relacionada ao tráfego e à criminalidade quando comparado com o de menor nível socioeconômico que teve percepção positiva em relação a proximidade de locais de lazer e segurança com a vizinhança.  Deste modo, observa-se que a houve  desigualdade socioeconômica na percepção do ambiente construído podendo esta influenciar o nível de atividade física da população, havendo assim, necessidade de mais estudos e revisão no planejamento de políticas públicas relacionadas à construção e manutenção de facilitadores da prática de atividade física no ambiente urbano.  </span></p>

The article aimed to characterize pathological gambling, showing the main consequences of this disorder. Bibliographic survey on this theme was conducted, covering both national and international literature. Publications whose main findings emphasized related prevalence, social and economic costs, gambling legalization and resulting impact on public health, were selected. High suicide rate, comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders, family and work problems, and illicit behavior were consequences reported. The prevalence of this disorder is higher in countries that have legalized gambling and in Brazil there is evidence of growth in the number of pathological gamblers. The development of national research is fundamental to define public policies that are adequate for the Brazilian context.
