Particularmente al concepto homo economicus, un tipo ideal que ha sido un punto de partida al diseñar criterios de medición de valor, equidad y riqueza. Para ello, la autora recupera reflexiones feministas sobre las tareas de cuidado y la independencia económica, un objetivo necesario, pero también engañoso para muchas mujeres. El aspecto más destacable de la obra es que, a partir de su crítica al homo economicus, sostiene que éste es un corset para aproximarse a las personas y sus respectivos roles en el mercado.
