RESUMOObjetivo: investigar a orientação sobre a importância da consulta puerperal durante o pré-natal e o puerpério imediato em ambiente hospitalar. Método: trata-se de um estudo do tipo epidemiológico observacional, com avaliação descritiva, de cunho transversal, fundamentado com abordagem quantitativa. O levantamento dos dados ocorreu entre o período de março de 2016 a janeiro de 2017 na maternidade de um hospital municipal da cidade de Barra do Garças, MT. Foram estudadas 216 puérperas. Um instrumento com questões fechadas foi utilizado para a coleta de dados. Para a organização e a descrição dos dados foi utilizada a estatística descritiva. Resultados: 92,1% das puérperas não foram orientadas quanto a consulta puerperal embora tenham realizado em média 6,59 consultas de pré-natal. Apenas 5,6% foram esclarecidas, no ambiente hospitalar, durante o puerpério imediato, destas somente 0,92% já haviam sido orientadas durante o pré-natal. Considerações Finais: por falta de orientação as mulheres são tolhidas de se beneficiarem da consulta puerperal. Sugere-se que sejam efetivadas medidas que promovam conscientização dos profissionais sobre a importância de se orientar e agendar a consulta puerperal, concretizar referência e contra referência entre atenção básica e maternidade.
