RESUMO INTRODUÇÃOAs relações entre afeto e cognição têm-se constituído num tema ao mesmo tempo atraente e intrigante, que desafia educadores e psicólogos por sua beleza e complexidade. A dificuldade em separá-los é a mesma que se encontra ao se tentar unificá-los num só corpo teórico, o que parece colocar as teorias e a nós mesmos, que nos deixamos encantar por esta questão, numa difícil posição de seu desenvolvimento: parece que constantemente numa posição inicial.Assim, os estudos desenvolvidos na área buscam, tal como este, respostas sobre relações parciais, aguardando a possibilidade, ainda que remota, de uma teoria que um dia, como Piaget (1973) "profetizou", possa ser considerada unificadora, capaz de esclarecer as intrincadas relações entre estes dois aspectos do funcionamento mental.Estas dificuldades têm sido retratadas em numerosos trabalhos realizados, como aqueles de Greenspan (1979), cujas tentativas de abordagem integradora entre as teorias psicanalíticas e piagetiana puderam esclarecer e levantar muitas questões, sem atingir, entretanto, a desejada forma de unificação.
