The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between quantitative T2 relaxation measurements of lumbar intervertebral discs (IVDs) and spinopelvic parameters in patients with chronic low back pain. The study was approved by the Clinical Hospital of the Ribeirao Preto Medical School (USP) Ethics Committee, and written consent was obtained from all patients. A total of 455 IVDs from 91 consecutive patients with chronic low back pain were included in this prospective study. All subjects were assessed using the Oswestry Disability Index and visual analogue scale questionnaires and were confirmed to have no other spine diseases except disc degeneration. Spinopelvic parameters including the pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS), sagittal vertical axis (SVA), global tilt (GT), T1 pelvic angle (TPA), lumbar lordosis (LL), thoracic kyphosis (TK), pelvic incidence minus lumbar lordosis mismatch (PI-LL), and lack of lumbar lordosis (LLL) were measured. The study group was categorized according to the Roussouly classification. Sagittal T2 maps were acquired to extract the IVD relaxation times, and the complete manual segmentation of IVDs at all levels was performed using Display s software. Lumbar IVD T2 relaxation times showed significant correlation with PT (Po0.01), GT (Po0.01), TPA (Po0.01), PI-LL (P=0.01), and LLL (P=0.01). No difference was noted between Roussouly subtypes regarding T2 relaxation times at any disc level. Data from questionnaires showed no correlation with T2 relaxation times. Global tilt and T1 pelvic angle were correlated with IVD composition changes (T2 relaxometry). There was no correlation between clinical symptoms and IVD T2 relaxation times.
Multidocument summarization consists in producing a summary from a group of texts on a same topic, containing the most relevant information according to the user's interest. Recently, with the huge amount of growing information over the internet and the short time available to learn and process the information of interest, automatic summaries have become a very important resource. In this work, we explored content selection methods for multidocument summarization based on CST (Cross-document Structure Theory) a recently proposed model and already investigated in the Computational Linguistics area. Particularly, in this work we defined and formalized content selection operators based on CST model. These operators represent possible summarization preferences and they focus on the treatment of the main challenges of multidocument summarization: redundancy, complementarity and contradiction among information. These operators are specified in templates containing rules and functions that relate the preferences to CST relations. Specifically, we define operators for extracting main information, context information, identifying authorship, treating redundancy and showing contradicted information. We also explored the impact of CST model over superficial summarization methods. Experiments were done using journalistic texts written in Brazilian Portuguese. Results show that the use of CST model helps to improve informativeness and quality in automatic summaries.
Abstract⎯ Local Coherence is a very important aspect in multidocument summarization, since good summaries not only condense the most relevant information, but also present it in a well-organized structure. One of the most investigated models for local coherence is the Entity-based model, which has been successfully used, once it facilitates the computational approach for coherence measurement. Particularly, this model was used for the evaluation of local coherence in multi-document summaries, achieving promising results. In order to improve the potential of the Entity-based model, we propose the creation of a language model for multi-document summaries that integrates the Entity-based model with discourse knowledge, mainly from Cross-document Structure Theory. Our results show that this type of information enriches the Entity-based Model by capturing other phenomena that are inherent to multi-document summaries, such as redundancy and complementarity, which improves the performance of the original model.
