Resumo: Este artigo visa abordar a bem-aventurança "Felizes os pobres no espírito, porque deles é o Reino dos Céus" (Mt 5,3). Parte da teologia bíblica e dos profetas, que veem o pobre como o sem condições de vida: o órfão e a viúva, mostra que Deus revelou seu amor em Jesus, que viveu radicalmente a opção pelos pobres em sua prática libertadora. Ser pobre no espírito não é apenas pobreza material, mas é ser despojado de si e movido pelo Espírito de Deus, enquanto ser pobre de espírito, é viver por interesses egoístas. Nesse viés, as principais conferências dos bispos latino-americanos orientaram a Igreja para o anúncio profético e libertador do Evangelho e para a denúncia das injustiças e da opressão presentes no continente.
