Durante los años cuarenta, la estética garcilasista y la neorromántica dominarán el panorama poético español. Ambas son una recuperación, una puesta al día de tendencias existentes en el pasado: el garcilasismo retoma la poética renacentista y el neorromanticismo hace lo propio con algunos planteamientos románticos. Por tanto, no ponen nunca en duda los valores de la tradición. Es más, proceden de sucesivas y parciales recuperaciones de aspectos de esa tradición. Sin embargo, la vanguardia sí pone en duda, sí niega esos valores. De hecho, se define por la pauta de la originalidad absoluta, al menos en el caso de las llamadas "vanguardias históricas" (Bürger, 1987), que protagonizaron un impulso radical de rebeldía, de subversión y de destrucción de lo existente. Este impulso fue visto por muchos intelectuales como el exponente artístico de la crisis que condujo a la civilización occidental a las dos guerras mundiales. Para poner fin a esta crisis, para conjurarla, para reaccionar ante la fuerte conmoción vanguardista, las propuestas estéticas fueron profundamente conservadoras: el clasicismo de los garcilasistas, empeñados en la fiel rememoración del arte, la literatura, la política, etc., del período imperial, y el neorromanticismo o las fórmulas de sín-tesis, las soluciones de compromiso -clasicismo y romanticismo, tradición y vanguardia-, que preservan en última instancia la faz tradicional del arte. La dialéctica entre tradición y vanguardia y la atribución a cada ismo de un carácter clásico o romántico tuvieron una larga pervivencia en la crítica española con un único fin: atemperar, domeñar la rebeldía vanguardista y lo que ésta significaba no sólo desde el punto de vista estético sino también político (Navas Ocaña, 1998 y 2001a.Este afán por atenerse a lo existente, por aferrarse al pasado para conjurar un presente de crisis, dará paso, ya en la década de los cincuenta, a una nueva tentativa estética que no se definirá por fin como recuperación de modelos anteriores. Al contrario, contra toda la 'poesía poética' quieren levantarse ahora los jóvenes adalides de la poesía social (Celaya, 1949). En este sentido, sus objetivos se asemejan en cierta forma a los de las vanguardias históricas, al menos en el deseo de acabar con la tradición poética, de romper de una vez por todas con la literatura. Y, sin embargo, con ellos, la vanguardia se convertirá definitivamente en historia, en tradición. Los garcilasistas y los neorrománticos, con sus habituales estratagemas asimiladoras, intentaron someterla adjudicándole un perfil clásico o romántico. Algo similar harán los poetas sociales, aunque no para domeñarla ni para refrenar su impulso subversivo, sino porque para ellos este impulso ya ha desaparecido.
