Anotheca spinosa es un hílido moderadamente grande, caracterizado por presentar un cráneo que en individuos adultos tiene una serie de espinas en la parte dorsal de la cabeza; aunque los ejemplares jóvenes carecen de estas proyecciones, éstos tienen el mismo patrón de coloración que los adultos. Esta especie presenta una distribución discontinua en la vertiente del Atlántico en los estados de Veracruz, Oaxaca y Chiapas, México; hacia el sur hasta la vertiente del Pacífico en el oeste de Panamá (Savage, 2002). Habita en bosques mesófilos y selvas tropicales, en un intervalo altitudinal entre los 95 y 2 068 m snm (Duellman, 2001). En México, el estado de conservación de esta especie es incierto, ya que existen pocos registros en algunas localidades. De acuerdo con Santos- Barrera et al. (2004), sólo se ha observado 1 ejemplar en los últimos 30 años. En este estudio, se presenta la distribución de esta especie en México, a partir de la información existente, así como de registros obtenidos recientemente.En los últimos 10 años, A. spinosa ha sido observada en localidades donde anteriormente había sido registrada, así como en localidades nuevas, en estados donde había sido registrada previamente, las cuales cubren vacíos en su distribución conocida (Fig. 1; Cuadro 1). Los registros recientes en localidades próximas a localidades conocidas en Veracruz se ubican en: el valle de Cuautlapan (Servín-Torres et al., 2010; Fig. 2A), donde se había mencionado como posiblemente extirpada (Cerón-De la Luz, com. pers., en Lips et al., 2004). En la localidad de Adolfo Ruiz Cortines, a 10 km al sureste de la localidad conocida en el volcán de San Martín (Fig. 2B) donde 2 ejemplares fueron observados en junio de 2010 y febrero de 2013, así como al noreste de San Andrés Tuxtla en 2013, aunque Vogt et al. (1997) mencionaron que esta especie es rara Nota científica
