The diagnostic value of leaf shape for mangrove species Avicennia germinans and A. schaueriana was examined in four areas within the Rio Parnaíba delta, Maranhão, Brazil. Elliptic Fourier analysis of 627 leaves, followed by principal component analysis, provided shape and size data; the first seven principal component shape variables expressed 99.2% total variation. Discrimination between twelve combinations of species, location and disturbance levels was studied using k‐nearest‐neighbour classification. The species differed significantly in leaf shape but determination was reliable only in the tallest undisturbed forest (germinans narrowly elliptic or ovate, base acute, apex acute to acuminate; schaueriana broadly obovate, base attenuate, apex rounded). Symmetric variables (PC1 and PC3, 84.5% total variation) showed strongest differences. Predominant variation between species was in relative width and base shape (PC1), and within species in ovateness (PC3) between conserved and regenerating areas. Leaves were significantly smaller in A. schaueriana. Vernacular taxa siriba branca and siriba preta were inconsistent with taxonomic species but often significantly different in leaf shape. Avicennia germinans varied more under different geographical and ecological conditions. Shape‐size correlation needs further allometric study. Species delimitation needs morphometric study of a broader character range. Vernacular taxa recognition should be studied with ethnobiological techniques.
A taxonomic survey of the genus Eleocharis R. Br. was carried out in the four municipalities of coastal Piauí state (Cajueiro da Praia, Ilha Grande, Luís Correia and Parnaíba) included in the Parnaíba Delta Environmental Protection Area. The survey was based on the morphological study of newly collected and existing herbarium material. Six species, native but not endemic to Brazil, were recorded: Eleocharis elegans (Kunth) Roem. & Schult., E. filiculmis Kunth, E. flavescens (Poir.) Urb., E. geniculata (L.) Roem. & Schult., E. mutata (L.) Roem. & Schult. and E. subarticulata (Nees) Boeckeler. Eleocharis flavescens and E. subarticulata are new records for Piauí and E. subarticulata also for the Brazilian Northeast. Descriptions, illustrations, identification keys and information on geographic distribution and habitat are presented. The identification key is provided in English and Portuguese.
Os descritores utilizados foram: “Bauhinia”, “Bauhinia AND câncer”, “Bauhinia AND terapêutica” e “Bauhinia AND diabetes”.
The present study is a taxonomic treatment of Bignoniaceae from the four municipalities of the coastal region of Piauí state (Cajueiro da Praia, Ilha Grande, Luís Correia, Parnaíba) in Northeast Brazil, based on morphological study of newly collected and existing herbarium material. The study recorded 26 species in 12 genera: Adenocalymma, Anemopaegma, Bignonia, Cuspidaria, Dolichandra, Fridericia, Handroanthus, Lundia, Neojobertia, Pleonotoma, Stizophyllum and Tanaecium. Apart from Handroanthus impetiginosus, which belongs to tribe Tecomeae, all other species belong to tribe Bignonieae. Five species (Adenocalymma apparicianum, A. pedunculatum, Anemopaegma heringeri, A. prostratum, Dolichandra hispida) are new records for the state of Piauí, 15 species are endemic to Brazil, and one has “Vulnerable” conservation status. The results emphasize the importance of taxonomic studies for knowledge of biodiversity and threats to native species, and reinforce the importance of conserving the region’s flora. Species descriptions, illustrations, identification keys and information on geographic distribution and habitat are provided.

As ações extensionistas, desenvolvidas inicialmente numa abordagem assistencialista, buscam hoje a interação e o diálogo entre conhecimentos científicos e conhecimentos tradicionais.

The increase in the average temperature of the planet can cause changes in rainfall regimes, deregulate the water capacity of a region, aggravate health problems in the population and cause economic losses. Analyzing sites that are undergoing a meteorological trend makes it possible to estimate the possible detriments of these changes in socioeconomic activities. Thus, we investigated temporal trends in historical series for precipitation and average temperature between 1962 and 2017 in the city of Parnaiba, Piauí. Rainfall data were compiled from the National Institute of Meteorology and the National Water Agency, obtaining maximum annual rainfall and average temperatures, for the classification of extreme events linked to precipitation was applied the Quantis technique. The averages over the years 1964, 1974 and 1985 were the rainiest of the series, referring to three peaks of flood (high precipitation). The years 1988 and 1991 were categorized as "very rainy". On the other hand, 1998-2017 were the driest years, presenting the highest numbers of drought, during which period the increase of fires occurred in Piaui. It can be concluded that droughts are longer, resulting in water reduction, and as soon as the climatological trends for the city exist, it is suggested that we can consider them as impacts of global climate change.
