Partiendo del paradigma cognitivo, el objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar el proceso motivacional de 505 dietantes crónicos: 368 mujeres y 137 varones de entre 18 y 39 años, a quienes se aplicaron la Escala Revisada de Restricción Alimentaria, el Cuestionario de Figura Corporal y una entrevista ad hoc. Se conformaron dos grupos con los sujetos que puntuaron bajo y alto en dicha escala. Los autores concluyen que el proceso motivacional que explica la restricción alimentaria crónica se caracteriza por factores hereditarios de problemas de sobrepeso, el aprendizaje de hábitos alimentarios no saludables y un estilo atribucional interno basado en la insatisfacción con la imagen corporal, mismos que ponen en marcha el mecanismo crónico de restricción/sobrealimentación.
