An updated synthesis of cyanobacteria and algae information is presented for Brazil aiming to refine the data gathered to date and evaluate the progress of the biodiversity knowledge about these organisms in the country since the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The results of 2015 showed an increase of 1,250 species (35.7%) when compared to 2010, reaching a total of 4,747 species. The most diverse classes in species number were the Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae had the highest increase in species number in the five-year interval. The Southeast and South regions were the most diverse, however, the Northeast, with the states of Piauí and Sergipe, and the Central-west region, with Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal, also stood out in the national algal biodiversity scenario. Despite the shortage of taxonomists and limited infrastructure, the results showed a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in the country during the study period, starting to even out regional geographical differences caused by subsampling. Key words: Biodiversity, phycology. -(Taxonomy and distribution of the green algal genus Halimeda (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) in Brazil). Halimeda is a genus of calcified coenocytic green algae with a well known ecological importance in some tropical areas. Bleached calcified segments of Halimeda may accumulate in large deposits of economic potential as is the case in the northeastern coast of Brazil. In a survey of the genus in Brazil based on recent collections and examination of abundant material deposited on Brazilian herbaria we identified seven species: Halimeda cuneata Hering, H. discoidea Decaisne, H. gracilis Harvey ex J. Agardh, H. incrassata (Ellis) Lamouroux, H. opuntia (Linnaeus) Lamouroux, H. simulans Howe and H. tuna (Ellis & Solander) Lamouroux. These species are described in detail, with emphasis on diagnostic characters. Our study has shown that the shape and size of the utricula in surface view, under scanning electron microscopy, can be utilized to discriminate some species. Fertile specimens of Halimeda cuneata and H. discoidea are reported for the first time in the region. Data on vertical and geographical distribution are presented for each species and the southern limit of the genus in the western Atlantic was extended.Key words -Brazil, Bryopsidales, Halimeda, Halimeda cuneata RESUMO -(Taxonomia e distribuição do gênero de algas verdes Halimeda (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) no Brasil).
Benthic chlorophytes from a coastal island in the Oriental Northeast of Brazil. This work presents a floristic survey of the marine benthic chlorophytes from Santo Aleixo Island, Pernambuco, Brazil. Six sampling points were selected on the subtidal zone, considering habitat diversity and wave breaking. The sampling points were visited during the rainy () seasons. Twenty-three infrageneric taxa were found. The order Bryopsidales was the most abundant (70 %) and among the families, the Caulerpaceae dominated with four species and three varieties. The similarity analysis among the sampling points evidenced two floristic groups: the first formed by the sampling points 1, 2, 3, and 4 (protected area) and the second by the points 5 and 6 (exposed area). The consolidated substrata presented a higher number of representatives (15) compared to the sandy substrata (12). Seventeen occurred during the rainy season, sixteen during the dry season, and eleven occurred at both seasons. Halimeda opuntia was considered frequent (66.6 %) at the two seasonal periods. The relatively high diversity of species of green algae observed on the Santo Aleixo Island may be related to an abundance of proper substrates contributing to the development of a rich phycological flora, high and constant temperatures, and a high water transparency.
Smith) Boyer, Cocconeis scutellum Ehrenberg, Diploneis bombus Ehrenberg, Grammatophora marina (Lyngbye) Kützing, Mastogloia binotata (Grunow) Cleve, Navicula longa Grunow, Nitzschia sp., Psammodiscus nitidus (Gregory) Round in Mann, Rhabdonema adriaticum Kützing, Trachyneis aspera (Ehrenberg) Cleve e Tryblionella coarctata (Grunow) Mann.
