El sueño es un comportamiento humano importante, y una de sus funciones principales es ayudar en el desarrollo de los procesos cognitivos. Esta caracterizado por dos factores los patrones que se definen como los matutinos, intermedios o vespertinos y los hábitos que están establecidos por cada individuo. La mala calidad del sueño y la somnolencia diurna en los estudiantes de medicina afectan el rendimiento académico, la salud física y salud mental. En la actualidad existen diferentes factores que intervienen en la calidad y los hábitos de sueño como lo son el uso de estimulantes para la mejora cognitiva, cada día aumenta el numero de estudiantes de medicina que utilizan estas sustancias para la mejorar su rendimiento académico, entre otras cosas; los cuales no tienen en cuenta los efectos adversos que opacan los resultado positivos de su uso. Muchas veces los mismos estudiantes no se percatan de estas situaciones, ya que están inmersos en la cantidad de compromisos académicos que poseen. Entender los efectos negativos de la calidad del sueño en el rendimiento académico hacer parte de el camino haciendo mejorar y promover la buenas calidad y buenos hábitos de sueño.
