En el diagnóstico de la situación actual y futuras perspectivas del control de la polución y la contaminación acuática, uno de los aspectos de mayor importancia para las entidades encargadas del manejo de cuencas hidrográficas es la interpretación de los datos de los análisis físico-químicos rutinarios mediante índices de calidad ambiental que incluyen no solo parámetros físicos, químicos y bacteriológicos, sino también variables biológicas que suministran información para el análisis e interpretación de los diferentes factores que inciden en la calidad del agua. A partir de 1990 se recoleCtaron muestras de agua y fauna bentónica en diferentes estaciones de las cuencas de los ríos Cali y Meléndez, en el departamento del Valle, para evaluar la interrelación entre los índices ambientales de calidad de agua y el tipo de fauna bentónica asociada. En este trabajo se utilizó el Indice de calidad de agua propuesto por la «Fundación Sanitaria Nacional» de los Estados Unidos. Este índice permite, a través de una escala numérica, hacer comparaciones de los diferentes niveles de degradación ambiental en los cuerpos de agua. En las cuencas estudiadas se presentan variaciones entre 77,2 y 32,5 unidades, las cuales se correlacionan con grupos de insectos en estado inmaduro, con énfasis especial en los órdenes Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera y Trichoptera.
