Resumo: Gonçalo Cadilhe era já um nome conhecido na literatura portuguesa de viagens quando em 2007 propôs ao semanário Expresso uma viagem temática, subordinada à figura de Fernão de Magalhães e à primeira circum-navegação. Chamou-lhe "biografia itinerante". De facto, o projecto -que passou das crónicas do jornal para a publicação em livro e para a difusão em série televisiva -procura trazer a vida do grande navegador para a ribalta, mas distingue-se das biografias tradicionais por enfatizar o lugar do biógrafo-viajante na contemporaneidade da sua própria viagem. A articulação de presente e passado no encontro de culturas, o jogo narrativo entre a reconstrução da figura de Magalhães e a representação da multifacetada diferença do Outro, o cruzamento do uno e do diverso na globalização actual, e ainda a sensibilidade do olhar do autor-viajante e o estilo dúctil da sua escrita, tudo isto foram razões substantivas para o enorme êxito que o livro conheceu. Tomando em consideração quer as discussões genológicas sobre biografia e sobre literatura de viagens, quer a questão da busca permanente do exótico no planeta global, o meu artigo pretende estudar a fecunda hibridez desta obra, que, na pós-modernidade, cruza tempos e espaços numa peculiar viagem de demanda intercultural.

Gegenspiel, o romance que o escritor alemão Stephan Thome publicou em 2015, tem a particularidade de apresentar aos leitores o mesmo universo diegético do seu romance anterior, Fliehkräfte (2012). Com efeito, as duas obras narram o casamento de Hartmut Hainbach – Professor de Filosofia na universidade de Bona – com a portuguesa Maria – que fora estudar Teatro para Berlim, na década de 80 –, centrando-se especialmente na crise em que a relação se encontra ao fim de vinte anos. A acção é, portanto, já conhecida, mas existe uma diferença importante: enquanto Fliehkräfte contava a história do ponto de vista de Hartmut, Gegenspiel mostra-a do ponto de vista de Maria. O presente estudo adopta uma orientação fundamentalmente intercultural e aborda a identidade híbrida da personagem de Maria para a apresentar como figura refl ectora tanto da contemporaneidade alemã como da portuguesa.
Em 1942, na sua autobiografia Die Welt von Gestern (O mundo de ontem) o famoso escritor e pacifista austríaco Stefan Zweig apresentava-se como alguém que, por via do seu cosmopolitismo, tinha conseguido resistir ao poder aglutinador do início da Grande Guerra. Esta auto-representação não correspondia, porém, ao que havia acontecido. Na realidade, a posição de Zweig fora bastante ambígua e, em grande parte, só chegara a clarificar-se graças à intervenção do autor francês Romain Rolland.No contexto de turvação e pós-verdades do século XXI, faz sentido lembrar estas maiores ou menores “falsificações” e evocar a amizade mantida por dois intelectuais de países adversários durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. O presente trabalho centrar-se-á nos episódios desse período em que a ligação entre os dois autores mais determinante se revelou para o posicionamento artístico e humano do escritor austríaco.
