INTRODUÇÃO: Durante o ano de 2021, em plena pandemia global de SARS-CoV-2, vários países foram surpreendidos pela manifestação de fungos da família Mucorales. Equipamentos de cuidados de suporte, nutrição parental, prescrição de corticosteroides e terapia com deferoxamina tornaram-se locais propícios para o desenvolvimento de uma grave infecção oportunista para os pacientes das UTIs que tentavam se recuperar do vírus SARS-Cov-2. Com a inalação de hifas dos fungos filamentosos, a depender da condição sistêmica e da agilidade dos profissionais no diagnóstico, o hospedeiro poderia se recuperar desta infecção fúngica prontamente, ou não. Ademais, a evolução do caso concreto tanto poderia resultar em tratamento cirúrgico ou no óbito do paciente. OBJETIVOS: Utilizando como paradigma as manifestações de Candidíase Invasiva, esta revisão quer mostrar a importância de conhecimentos construídos a partir de estudos recentes sobre a Mucormicose e os desequilíbrios sistêmicos promovidos pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2. MÉTODOS: Foram selecionados artigos publicados em português e inglês, entre 2020 e 2022, em periódicos com Qualis A e B, usando os critérios de descrição das doenças, consequências e processo bioquímico. RESULTADOS: Os pacientes internados em UTIs de COVID-19, com maior predisposição para desenvolver a Mucormicose, possuem como condições: diabetes, comprometimento imunológico, leucemia, insuficiência renal, transplante de medula óssea, histórico de internação hospitalar para suporte de oxigênio ou uso de altas doses de esteróides. CONCLUSÕES: A relação entre o SARS-CoV-2 e a Mucormicose permitiu diversos grupos de pesquisas na tentativa de transformar conhecimento em informação para proteger não só pacientes, mas também profissionais da saúde. Apesar da atuação multidisciplinar, a Odontologia tem um papel importante no processo de diagnóstico precoce, tratamento cirúrgico, recuperação e reabilitação, considerando a incidência das lesões na região bucomaxilofacial dos pacientes.Palavras-chave: "Covid-19"; "Unidades de Terapia Intensiva"; "Infecções oportunistas"; "Hospedeiro imunocomprometido".
