Humoral and cellular response following a tetanus booster was similar in both groups. Premature infants exhibited lower levels of anti-tetanus antibodies at 15 months of age, with the lowest levels in those born at a gestational age of less than 32 weeks. Breastfeeding was associated with greater levels of antibody against tetanus.
Humoral responses to measles and varicella were similar between infants born prematurely and full-term infants. Measles antibody levels were negatively associated with antenatal corticosteroid use; varicella antibodies were positively associated with prolonged breastfeeding.
Background and aims: Antibody response may be lower in preterm infants. This study aimed to compare the immune response to vaccination against measles, varicella and tetanus in preterm and term infants and to analyze factors associated with antibody level.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
