Postharvest diseases constitute a serious problem for avocado commercialization. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of conventional and alternative products in controlling diseases affecting ‘Hass’ avocados in the field and in the postharvest by carrying out physicochemical characterization of fruits subjected to postharvest treatments. In the field, besides the management adopted by the farmer, seven products were sprayed three times during fruiting for evaluation. Postharvest products were diluted in water or in oxidized polyethylene wax and shellac. Water treatments with potassium phosphite, Soil-Set®, chlorine dioxide, thyme essential oil, sodium bicarbonate, lemon grass essential oil and thiabendazole reduced the incidence of diseased fruits, and anthracnose, the main disease, was controlled with sodium bicarbonate, lemon grass essential oil and thiabendazole. Greater soluble solids content was found for control (water), chlorine dioxide, acibenzolar-S-methyl and thiabendazole. For the products that reduced anthracnose, there was no correlation between the disease and the physicochemical parameters, evidencing that the disease control is not associated with delayed ripening. For wax treatments, diseases were not controlled, and the fruits presented lower titratable acidity with thyme essential oil, sodium bicarbonate, control (wax), acibenzolar-S-methyl and lemon grass essential oil. Control and thyme essential oil were highlighted for maintaining the green coloration of the fruit skin for the shortest period. Under field conditions, azoxystrobin, thiabendazole, difenoconazole+azoxystrobin and acibenzolar-S-methyl+azoxystrobin reduced the occurrence of diseased fruits, while anthracnose control was only obtained with azoxystrobin.
Postharvest diseases are a major problem in guava crops as the symptoms normally appear during fruit ripening. This study aimed to detect and characterize the temporal dynamics and spatial patterns of the most important guava diseases in orchards with and without removal of crop residues as a sanitation practice. The experiment was conducted in an orchard of ´Pedro Sato´ guavas, over two consecutive seasons, and data were collected from the flowering to the fruit ripening stage. In immature guavas treated with paraquat and ethrel, Colletotrichum spp.was detected from the 5 th day of incubation. Anthracnose was detected in flowers at incidences higher than 50 % and black spot in fruit larger than 5.5 cm in length. The monomolecular and the exponential models provided the best fit to anthracnose and black spot incidence progress curve data, respectively. Both diseases showed a predominantly random spatial pattern in the orchard. The removal of crop residues reduced the rate of disease progress in at least one season, and was effective in reducing the areas under the quiescent disease progress curves (AUDPC) of anthracnose. Anthracnose incidence increased from 57 to 96 % and black spot from 1 to 48 %, respectively, at fruit maturation levels 1 and 3. A negative correlation was found between disease incidence and the color of the fruit skin (°h). Fruit harvested during the later maturation stages showed higher incidence of the diseases. Due to the wide distribution and early infection of quiescent diseases, starting at flowering, preventive management should consider disease monitoring and removal of crop residues.
ABSTRACTOne of the major problems in guava commercialization is the incidence of postharvest diseases, which coincides with fruit ripening. The effect of alternative products [potassium phosphite, calcium chloride, cassava starch, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), ethanol followed by sodium dichloro s. triazinetrione dehydrate (ethanol+chlorine)] and hydrothermal treatment, singly and in association, was evaluated on anthracnose control and on the physicochemical characteristics of 'Pedro Sato' guava. Treatments were applied to naturally infected guavas, in three maturity stages, which were stored at 22 or 25ºC for eight days. The incidence of anthracnose was evaluated by visual observation of symptoms and signs of the pathogens under an optical microscope, and the evaluated physicochemical parameters were skin color, pulp firmness, fresh mass loss, soluble solids, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid. The association of treatments ethanol+chlorine/cassava starch, hydrothermal treatment/cassava starch and ethanol+chlorine/1-MCP reduced the incidence of anthracnose in all three maturity stages in at least one storage period, leading to longer shelf life of fruits and a delay of two to four days in the onset of the disease. The maintenance of guava quality by means of tr...
De maneira geral, recomenda-se o tratamento termoterapia/fécula para goiabas armazenadas a 22-25ºC, como forma de manutenção da qualidade físico-química e atrasando em pelo menos dois dias os sintomas de podridões. termos para indexação: Psidium guajava, qualidade físico-química, podridões qualitY of 'Pedro sato' guavas as function of Postharvest alternative treatments abstract -this study aimed to evaluate the effect of alternative products and thermotherapy, singly and in combination, on the physicochemical quality and controlling decay of 'Pedro Sato' guavas. initially the treatments with calcium chloride, potassium phosphite, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), cassava starch, ethanol followed by chlorine (ethanol+chlorine) and thermotherapy were evaluated for eight days of fruits storage at 22°C. in a second step, four treatments were selected (cassava starch, 1-MCP, thermotherapy and ethanol+chlorine) and evaluated the association of two, applied sequentially, during eight days of fruits storage at 25 °C. the 1-MCP treatment and cassava starch were the most effective in keeping the physicochemical quality of 'Pedro Sato' guavas, slowing the weight loss, change of skin color, and contributing to firmness retention. greater reduction in fruit rot was found in thermotherapy, cassava starch and 1-MCP treatments. the associations of 1-MCP/cassava starch and thermotherapy/cassava starch were the most eff...
PRE AND POST-HARVEST DISEASES IN MANGO VARIETIES CULTIVATED IN ORGANIC SYSTEMABSTRACT -The choice of mango variety to be used in an organic production system should be related with phytosanitary limitations, thus the objective of the present study was to evaluate the behavior of mango varieties cultivated in organic system in relation to the diseases powdery mildew, flower malformation and post harvest diseases. Seventeen mango varieties were evaluated, cultivated in organic system, planted in experimental design in randomized blocks, with 17 treatments and six repetitions. The incidence of flower malformation was determinate through the observation and count of the plants with symptoms of the disease. To evaluate the severity of malformation and powdery mildew were used scales of notes. For the characterization of the post-harvest diseases the severity of the anthracnose was visually evaluated after 1, 4, 7 and 10 days of the fruits harvest. After obtaining the data, the area under the disease progress (AUDP) was calculated. It can be concluded that the Rosa variety is very resistant to the flower malformation...
The guava fruit is very as high perishable due to its intense metabolism and the occurrence of postharvest diseases. Due to the lack conservation technologies for this fruit, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of alternative products [potassium phosphite, calcium chloride, cassava starch edible coat, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), ethanol followed by dichloro s. triazinatriona sodium (ethanol+chlorine)] and hot water treatments, singly or in combination, in black spot control and the physic-chemical characteristics of ‘Pedro Sato’ guavas. The treatments were evaluated in naturally infected guavas at three maturity stages and stored at 22-25ºC and 80-85% RH for 8 days. The treatment association of ethanol+chlorine and cassava starch reduced the incidence of black spot in three maturity stages of guavas, allowing the increase of fruit’s shelf life, with a delay of two to four days in the onset of black spot symptoms. The maintenance of the physical and chemical quality characteristics of guavas with association of treatments were evidenced by the delay in skin color change, and a smaller decrease in firmness. Correlation occurred between the black spot incidence and the skin color parameter, ie, fruits harvested at later maturity stages presented higher incidence of the disease. The greater efficiency of ethanol+chlorine/starch association in the control of black spot was directly related to the ripening delay in fruits, evidenced by the skin color and firmness attributes.
